PRESS RELEASE - RACING

INQUIRY – TRAINER M T MAHIAKOLA

The National Horseracing Authority confirms that at an Inquiry held in Johannesburg on Wednesday, 24 March 2021, Trainer Mr Mahiakola was charged with a contravention of Rule 10.5.1. The particulars being that, he, as a licensed Trainer, failed to provide the requisite level of care, treatment and training to the horses under his control between the 23rd to the 27th of February 2021, by not allowing the person left in charge of his stable reasonable access to his feed room. This resulted in horses not being fed during this period and being kept in stables where the conditions were below the accepted standard required, in terms of adequate bedding, cleanliness and general animal welfare.

Trainer Mahiakola pleaded guilty to the charge and was found guilty of the charge.

In determining a suitable penalty, the Board took into consideration everything that was said at the inquiry as well as all evidence put forward by witnesses. The Board took into account that this was Trainer Mahiakolas’ second offence for a contravention of this rule within a one-year period following him being found guilty of a contravention of this rule at an inquiry in March 2020 where his penalty was a fine of R10.000 and his trainer’s licence being cancelled. This cancellation was wholly suspended for a period of three years providing that during the period of suspension, he was not found guilty of a contravention of a similar charge.

The Board ruled that an appropriate penalty was that Trainer Mr Mahiakolas’ Trainers licence be cancelled.

Trainer Mahiakola has the Right of Appeal against the penalty imposed.

It would be very interesting to see which owners have horses with him.

Let a good few people down who supported and trusted him....
Obviously just talks the talk as observed by Mike Miller...seems a bullshitter of note...
Mike Miller summed it up well: “He’s a hard worker and has the gift of the gab, which is half the battle in this game.”

He deserves more support and he has an unquestionable affinity with the horses,” said Kritsiotis.

Ask any jockey who was with Michael in his apprentice days and they will tell you that he took particular pride in turning out his horse – stable management obviously is his game.

I could see though that he wanted to work with the horses. I was happy that he was going to make contact with Michel Nairac in Durban and off he went with my encouragement to go and live his dream,” said Kritsiotis.

I am so pleased. He has always talked a big game and aimed high – but with his drive and passion, the world is his oyster. Who knows where he could go?” said Nico Kritsiotis.

We aren’t all experts on everything from feed to shoes to veterinary matters – and I have found that asking questions of people that know and then listening is the way to broaden one’s skills set.”

“Horses are me, man, and I love horses, and Nico Kritsiotis (on-course commentator) could see that I wasn’t having a good time and then he said he would assist me to be a trainer. He has been instrumental in helping me.”

“It’s exciting, it’s a dream that one has always dreamed of and a passion that one loves.”

“They say you cannot get advice from people unless they have made it, so once I’ve made it, then I will be a living testimony. They will follow my path.” – simnikiweh@citizen.co.za

The man has had 5 runners this year and not earned a cheque. It's a miracle that he has lasted as long as he has. Perhaps its time for him to lower his sights and get a job as an assistant.

I'm not sure what this question has to do with the topic Magi?

Perhaps if we had a competent regulatory body they would consider every colour holders annual reapplication on merit and deny licences to individuals on the grounds that they do not have a sustainable "business". Unfortunately all it appears that they are interested in is the fees received.

i imagine he lacks some business skills. managing his finances etc. Late Mr. Maponya horses probably kept him afloat last while.

problem is(old hobby horse) to many trainers in SA. Way down from 10 years ago but still about 40 to many yards.

NHRA should force yards to perform each season. if not give them an option to merge with another yard.

NHRA should issue 100 licenses per season. to get to tha number they should start at 130 and each season drop 5 for the next 6 seasons.

NHRA should Assist smaller yards with training programs around Business processes, Customer retention, marketing etc.

why less yards make sense. Owners are protected. 7 Year old maidens?? really i love the horse???
Less Christmas time results?
Less supplier defaults?

The Late Richard Maponya had at least one or 2 horses with him.
