Cape Winter Series / July 2021

I see the Cape Winter Series starts this week.

The Bass yard have decided to run Marina (full sister to Marinesco) against the colts and she should really do well and in the second and third legs.

However for me it’s sad that she won’t be able to do what her brother did, remember he ran in the first 2 legs of the WS and then ran second in the July (he won it the following year).

Even if she wins the first 2 legs of the WS her merit rating will be too low because she won’t be exposed to older horses.

The blanket was increase in ratings a few years back has changed the dynamic for 3years olds wanting to run in the July.

It’s unlikely that Summer Pudding is 10kgs better than some of better Cape 3yr old fillies like Marina.

I like the winter series, i don`t think there`s a rush with Marina. Run in the WS then farm break for the Cape Season

Bob what makes you say that, did you speak to Candice or the owners?

The point is even if Marina improves dramatically the connections are unlikely to be able to follow in the footsteps of her brother.

I believe she is a typical Bass filly that will improve and improve.
They on record and her form suggests she is looking for further so this weekend wont be her trip.
Her brother got better the further they went and she also seems to have good acceleration like him.

In previous years if she got to 110 she would be considered for the July.
No chance this year.

Marina is a nice filly, but nowhere near the class of her brother at this stage. The Bass yard have a strong bunch of 3yo fillies, but not much among the colts. Chat Ching should win the Sweet Chestnut, and they have a good backup in Lemon Delight. So it makes sense to put Marina against the boys where most of the big guns are out of town. Hoedspruit is the highest rated, although Fourie is on Warrior so presumably thinks that one is more progressive. Our boy Crimson King has had a season plagued with bad luck, and comes into the race without a prep run. We had intended to go to Fairview last month for the EC Guineas, but that wasn't possible.. However his effort in the Cape Derby was decent, and at best he is as good as Hoedspruit on exposed form. The question will just be whether he needs this run. If all goes well with him I expect him to be in the money on Saturday, and to be a big contender for the next two legs over further.
I would not be at all surprised to see Marina run in the places, although I think 1600m is her minimum trip now.

Bass yard also has Zarina who runs in the Fillies Guiness which the yard won the 2 years ago.

I must say the Cape fillies are interesting this year, Lemon Delight who also runs in the WS ran in the sales race against the colts including a few from Gauteng. She was drawn wide and raced at the back of the field but in the straight went past Willow Magic from the Tarry yard like he was standing still. WM has form to the best in Gauteng...

I think Warrior is perfectly made for the winter series. He is big and strong with a great action.
For me, if he wins on Saturday, the series is all wrapped up!

Marina will continue to improve over ground, let’s hope she gets a smarter jockey next time.

It is likely that the Winter Guineas was a false run race. The times for the 4 races over 1600m were
Winter Guineas 102 54 secs
Fillies 101.73
MR 94. 100.05
MR 80 100.59
Even allowing for the fact that the latter two races were older horses carrying 57.5kg, the colts race was slow.
Fire Alley was given a soft lead at a sedate pace, and I doubt whether he will confirm that form with the others in a true run race, particularly when they go further. If Marina is used as the line horse, then Firealley and Warrior go from 92 to 106 and 107 respectively. Crimson King then deemed to run 100, Hyde Park 100 and Northern Song 99. I think that’s what the handicapper will do, but in my view would be at least 5 points too high for all.
