The jocks decide on their own commission rate - the jockey club deducts a minimum of 7% commission but if they want to increase that rate they advise the NHA accordingly - the only thing that WILL stop them is if owners take a stand & refuse to use those jockeys charging the higher fees.

So once again, in terms of it's mandate, shouldn't this be something that the RA should be informing their members about on a regular basis? Like in the 'Keeping you on Track' publication?

I'm not saying that rider "A" does or doesn't 'deserve' 10%.

My question is what happened to the difference 7 - 10% = 7.5, 8, 8.5, 9, 9.5%?

Room to negoiate if you disagree or do you find someone else?

I'm not doubting a Jockey's right to charge 10%, just wondering if such negoiating happens?

Respectfully, Jim

A while back the jockeys went on strike for a increase in riding fee to R500 per ride.
They soon backed off when contracted jockeys and apprentices kept racing going for 2 weeks.
As an owner you can refuse to accept 10% Make it clear to your trainer not to engage the 10 percenters If they sit in the jockey room of half of the races they will soon come to their senses.
I believe about 8 are worth 10% in the country not 27.

just giving a few figures based on LAST seasons results.

Jock Danielson, about # 21 on national log - average jockey imo
Had he taken a 10% fee = 241,412 per year ( wins only)
had he taken a 7% fee = 168,988 - difference ( EXTRA 72,000 odd )

now Mark Khan ( NO DOUBTING A TOP JOCK)

Last season 10 % take out = 809,748 - wins only
Last season 7 % take out = 566,823 - DIFFERENCE R 242,000 + / - ( INCREASE )

In my book that equates to a 30% pay increase ( based on his winning rides only ) No bad ! Wish i could get an increase like that.

No wonder our owners out there are battling to make ends meet.
Lets not forget, as the stakes pot goes UP - so does the jockeys numeration - be it 7% or 10% of the NEW WINNING STAKES.

Food for thought.

heres a stupid question ,why are trainers or jockeys entitled to any percentage of the winning cheque..where did this agreement originate from and was the percentage always the same..the only way an owner has a chance of recouping money is through stakes so should the whole stake cheque go to the owners...should trainers and jockeys make their income only via training fees or riding fees ..

the difference is in dubai the stakes are in line with the costs and if that was the case here we would not be having this discussion..

In the UK I beleive that both Jock and Trainer get 10%.

As for the origin - I dare say back in the early days of racing, the jocks only got paid for 'winning' the race. Anyone out there with the info?
