A professional gambler is threatening to go to the police after discovering winnings of £1,050 on a greyhound bet had been paid to a mystery punter who claimed to have lost his ticket.
William Hill have launched an investigation following a complaint from former bookmaker Julian Recknell, 41, from Putney, south-west London, who left the money unclaimed for two months before returning to the firm's shop in nearby Roehampton eight days ago to collect his winnings.
“One of the managers told me that on August 10 somebody was paid out on my bet using a ‘lost ticket' form, but it wasn't me. I have no idea who it was,” said Recknell, who claims to be a ‘monitored customer', and intends to take the matter further unless it is resolved to his satisfaction.
“The bet was struck on July 6, and I'm amazed alarm bells didn't ring when a person comes in five weeks later saying they had lost their ticket,” he added.
Recknell, who says he has frequented the shop for 15 years, has been told by Hills' customer services department that the internal inquiry should have been completed by this weekend, but he asked on Sunday: “How the hell can my money have been collected, I've got the ticket?
“I know it is only £1,000, but it is the principle of the thing and if I don't get satisfaction, I will get the police involved and I'll go to a solicitor and spend a lot of money to get it sorted out, because I'm totally innocent.”
Hills spokesman David Hood said: “We are aware of the complaint, and are investigating.”
