Gold Circle Media Achieves a Clean Sweep at Equus AwardsReintroducing the Equus Media Awards for the 2020/2021 racing season was very timely. It has been 17 months since the public have not been able to attend a race meeting. Their only connection to what has happened in the horseracing industry since March 2020 has been through the media. For anyone in South African horseracing, winning an Equus Award is recognition of achieving excellence in our industry. For most winners on the night there have been many moments of joy and celebration during the past 12 months which has resulted in the award being presented. For the media representatives, it is very different. They are not part of the limelight. They are in the background. Their job is to capture the moments of joy and celebration of equine achievements and to deliver them in a way that preserves the excitement and shares these experiences with the public. Very seldom will the journalists, photographers, digital content creators or broadcasting personnel be publically appraised for their contribution to the horseracing industry. The Equus Media Award categories were Still Photography, Broadcast and Print with the Gold Circle Media and Publishing team collecting all three awards. Candiese Lenferna will have Hollywoodbets to thank for getting Siya Kolisi to visit Blackwhite-Dynamite at the Peter Muscutt stable, as she was able to capture the award winning shot of the Springbok Captain sharing a moment with the thoroughbred. The fact that this photograph was captured away from the spotlight of the race course is testament to the hours of work that Candiese places into her craft and is not only present on the showcase days of our sport.

The Broadcast category was awarded to Tawanda Taruvinga, for his production entitled “A day in my life: Justin Snaith”, created for Gold Circle’s #becauseweloveit social media campaign. Relatively new to the game, Tawanda laughs as he recounts one of his first attempts to interview one of the sport’s legendary jockeys as he was dismounting a beaten favourite. A lesser man may have been discouraged from challenging tradition and stretching the limits, however Tawanda has earnt the respect of horseracing stakeholders through his hard work and determination, which provided him the opportunity to not just interview multiple Champion Trainer, Justin Snaith, but to create an insightful production of what drives the man behind the most powerful stable in South African Horseracing. Without the advantage of visuals, racing journalists are tasked with captivating their readers through their copy. This year’s Equus Print Award went to David Thiselton. David has been a Racing Journalist for 15 years and this is his 3rd Equus Media Award. An avid analyst of previewing horses, David is also able to use his vast experience and knowledge to produce articles that recreate the experiences of race day and he was able to do exactly that with his article on 2021 Vodacom Durban July winning owner, Ashwin Reynolds, who due to Covid restrictions could not be at Hollywoodbets Greyville for the big day and had to watch Africa’s greatest horse race from home with his friends and family. The cherry on top of a highly successful evening for the Gold Circle media team was an Equus Special Achievement Award for Graeme Hawkins. After nearly 45 years in the industry Graeme continues to add immense value to Gold Circle and the many Boards and Committees he contributes to.
Gold Circle congratulates each and every 2020/2021 Equus Award winner.
