Stakeholders and spectators to require proof of full vaccination
3 years 6 months ago
Spectators and Stakeholders, including owners, suite holders, trainers, jockeys and grooms to require proof of full vaccination to gain access to the racecourse from 20 November 2021
Much has happened over the past few weeks through various Government engagements to re-open horseracing to spectators across South Africa.
The sport of horseracing is now at a point where they have been given the green light to allow limited numbers of vaccinated spectators back on course.
In line with the Disaster Management Act Regulations (DMAR) and the directive issued by the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture, Phumelela Gaming and Leisure together with Cape Racing have announced that going forward only fully vaccinated supporters will be able to return to the respective tracks on Race Days.
The number of stakeholders and spectators granted access on course will be aligned with the limits announced by the Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Mr Nathi Mthethwa. All COVID-19 protocols will be strictly adhered to with a maximum of 2000 spectators permitted entry on race days.
Racing was initially opened up to all spectators irrespective of their vaccination status but as per the gazetted directive issued by the Minister on 15 October 2021, only vaccinated persons may attend sporting events.
Said Phumelela Racing Executive Patrick Davis, “By adopting and endorsing the government vaccination roll out plan we hope to assist in speeding up the process of reaching effective population protection in South Africa and getting to a point where we can welcome back tens of thousands of people to the track. The Gauteng Spring season is well underway and the Cape Summer season is just commencing - hopefully this policy will encourage our fans to get the jab so that they can come back to course to watch and support the top horses in the country performing.”
Both operators, Phumelela and Cape Racing fully support the South African Government’s vaccine roll out strategy to provide a defense against the COVID-19 pandemic.
With the Sports, Arts and Culture community coming together to support and actively advocate getting vaccinated, it will allow the sector to go back to work safely. #VaccinateSAReady #VaccinatetosaveSouthAfrica.
Bradley Ralph, Cape Racing chairperson concludes, “We all want the world to return to normal as quickly as possible, and by following the government recommendations, and adhering to all covid protocols, this will hopefully happen. We look forward to being able to welcome all our loyal fans back to the track soon.”
Notes to Stakeholders & Spectators:
COVID-19 protocols for all race day meetings will be based on the 5 cornerstones of prevention:
Being Fully Vaccinated
Social Distancing with wearing of masks
Protect and Detect
Communication
Sanitisation and Hygiene
All spectators will need the present the following to gain access to the track:
Vaccination certificate with QR Code
ID document or driver’s license
Mask covering mouth and nose

I am vaccinated by choice but really I don't think it is fair to force others to do so as there is no real proof that a vaccinated person cannot transmit the disease so what is the reason for this? I believe being vaccinated does lessen your chances of hospitalization but it does not give me the right to force anyone to do as I do... If i'm immunised then i could contract covid from a vaccinated or unvaccinated person but I would be better prepared to fight the virus - I just don't like the idea of forcing people to give up their rights when the science is still evolving and the government has not made it mandatory to vaccinate

I wait with bated breath to see this protocol adopted with taxis.
I am also fully vaccinated, by choice.
This is a slippery slope.

Hopefully most of the grooms are vaccinated. Can imagine the reasons for horses being scratched, no available groom.

With figures of 200-400 cases per day now why worry? If they did not contract through the last 2 winters why would there be a sudden surge considering that there were outbreaks amongst jockeys, trainers and owners in the height of Covid -
How about Vac Certs at totes incase we have no punters left to fund the game - I'm all for Vacs but I'm NEVER for forcing people to do so -

There is really going to far.People have a choice in life. I must be honest, I registered and when I did go three months ago the question were so long and haven’t gone. However since then I have known fully vaccinated people who got the virus and I was around them and I was ok. When government started a month ago changing their tune about vaccinations being your choice and soon places will be restricted, I decided to wait. Surely with 20 odd million who have vaccinated ,things should be far better going into a so called predicted wave,if not then what’s the use of having a vaccination.
Are they scared that anyone on course who is vaccinated will get the virus from someone who hasn’t got the vaccination?
I am just going to organise a vaccination certificate, through a doctor or a contact and just pay just like most will do. I’m looking forward to a day at the track.
