I am shocked at the stakes on offer for maiden races in Cape Town in what I assume is their "off season" adjustments. Maidens are racing for the sum of R55000. Compared to the Eastern Cape at R65000 and both KZN and Gauteng at R100000, its embarrassing. Now winning a maiden in CT gets you R34375. After 10% from both trainer and jock ( many trainers down there seem to believe they deserve a lot more for some reason ) you are left with R27 500. Thats 2 months keep. Why would you race there?

Bass:

Country Time

Distance: 1000m

Comments: She shows speed and ability at home and could well make her presence felt on debut if she can overcome her wide draw.

Perilla

Distance: 1000m

Comments: She will need more experience especially from this draw.

Don Reposado

Distance: 1000m

Comments: He is doing well and from a 1 draw will go close here. Each Way claims.

Silent War

Distance: 1400m

Comments: Banker!! We would be very disappointed should he not win this time.

Tchaikovsky: Scratched.

Duplicity

Distance: 1400m

Comments: She is in good shape at the moment and we hoping to turn it around with Oscars Winner at the weights. Good Each Way chance.

Symphony Of Light

Distance: 1400m

Comments: She has the ability but is hampered by breathing issues so will need things to go her way to feature here. Tongue tie fitted.

Golden Dah

Distance: 2000m

Comments: She didn’t have things go her way last time, but draws well again this time trying the 2000m. if she sees out the trip she should have a good each way chance.

Raising Quinn

Distance: 1600m

Comments: Impressive first run out the maidens and she has winning claims, but a poor draw at Durbanville can be deadly. We will need some luck, but Include in all bets.

Just Power

Distance: 1600m

Comments: I think the drop in trip will make her more competitive. Back end of quartets

Costa Smeralda:

Distance: 1600m

Comments: Needs to Improve.

Ovation

Distance: 1250m

Comments: Not the best draw, but we hoping with the tongue tie fitted now, it will make a huge difference.

Lovely to see trainer go out on a limb and say, ‘This horse will win.’ Sure, the horse in question is 5/10 but it’s more refreshing than the usual ‘We are hoping for a good run’

Good luck to the Basses, the punters and to Silent War.

Maidens in CPT in the off-season are R70k and the maiden handicaps are R55k, in any case it is still way to low.

Warm and sunny with a fresh headwind.
Race 1 Of the exposed runners, Porque Te Vas and Bonika look the right two. However, Open Secret and A Time To Flower should improve with a run under the belt, and the first timers are unknown.
Race 2 Della's Sword has improved each run and looks the one to beat. Masterful Guy, Don Reposado and Jury Duty look the dangers. Raining Again and Boisterous Buddy are inconsistent but can upset.
Race 3 If this were a level weights maiden I would be happy to take odds on Silent War- However, its a maiden handicap so the price is crazy. Jem Rock is 5kg better off with the favourite for a 2 length beating behind Sage King which reduces to 3kg if you allow for WFA adjustments. Al Bugatti had his best run at Durbanville. Electric Warrior gets 7kg and if he reproduces his first run this course, will come home lonely. I will put all 4 of these in the pick 6.
race 4 An open handicap. Duplicity is consistent, Oscar's Winner looks progressive, Symphony of Light loves this course, Warm Welcome and Twilight Hour won't be far off.
Race 5 We have Fynbos in another open handicap. She is well, but has a wide draw and top weight and will need luck in the running. Should be in the money again.
Race 6 We have Treasure Hunt here. She is fit and well and just missed last time in a similar lineup. Hopefully she can get it right today. Peut Etre Moi looks the main danger but a competitive race.
Race 7 We have Gentleman running here. Gets a fair draw and is fit and well. Has come down to a competitive rating so hoping he can run in the money. Ragnar Lothbrok was butchered last time when missing the break and way out of his ground, but finished like a train. He looks very hard to beat here.
Race 8 Another tricky race. On his recent form, hard to believe that Silver Salmon ran a short head off Cosmic Highway on debut at level weights. Trivial Matter looks progressive, as does Ferrando.
