FINAL FIELDS Golden Horse Sprint Day

3 years 1 week ago
#842967
The Paul Matchett-trained Battle Force, victorious last year in the Gr1 Golden Horse Sprint, heads a full field of 16 as he bids to defend his crown at Hollywoodbets Scottsville on Saturday, June 4.

It will be a tough task as last year he carried bottom weight, this year he is at the top of the handicap where there is only 4kg separating top from bottom to conform to international Gr1 conditions.

This year's race will be a tight contest.

The Golden Horse has attracted the country's top sprinters and forms the last leg of the Gr1 quartet, along with the Allan Robertson and Gold Medallion and the SA Fillies Sprint.
All four races have attracted top class entries in what will be a smashing day's racing

Warriors Rest rated 111, Tempting Fate rated 110. Warriors Rest a former winner of the very same race.

Back in the day of Race Figure, horses with pathetic form was running in features but because of prior wins always got in. A former winner of a race was never omitted.

Thanks Naresh but I cannot accept that rationale if that is the criteria being used by the selection panel. By this rationale any previous winner without form can be back in the race.

How does a horse that has run 2 places in 19 months, before the second place in March it had been 17 months since the horse last placed get a run?. How on this green earth does the horse keep the rating for that long???

My gripe is not against the horse but the situation of having a horse with what would be considered NO form racing in a grade 1. The horse will be 40/1 and the trainers comment is that the horse finished second in a race in March and is in a good space. This should cover them if the horse runs a drum or even wins however if the horse runs off the boards well then it was half expected. Should this horse win then you will hear a trilogy on how they have overcome to get the horse back to his potential.

All the while the punter is none the wiser which is my problem with this situation.

This is nothing new however it is my belief that these exact situations drive punters away.

Same shit different day.... Same as the horses being "looked after" last weekend.

@Tigershark. Warriors Rest has a higher rating than Tempting Fate and that would have been the criteria that it got in ahead of Tempting Fate. All others horses that was eliminated have a lower rating.

In the UK, all the big handicaps are "handicaps". Even if you have 5 wins in a row and a horse with no form never win in two years but has a higher merit rating, it will always get in. No discretion by the handicapper is taken into account. In South Africa we have a situation that a lot of Graded Races are handicaps and the Racing Operator can have the final say. Note, other racing jurisdictions also can use their discretion into the final field for the Graded Races if there is an overflow of runners.
