.....I had the pleasure of meeting and briefly chatting with Greg Bortz at the recent Sales....and can safely say that while he is around....Cape racing is definitely on the right path....and although his pledge and participation is evidently taxing as this is an epic venture....much better local racing days are on the way.....:P

.....I am in awe at the pace that these guys are moving at.....as they have already announced that they will be entering the thoroughbred sales arena in the Cape and thus displacing the CTS who have announced that they are getting out to make way for Cape Racing Bloodstock Division.....:unsure:

These are racing people who understand business and more importantly the business of horseracing. Every recent announcement from CR is on point, strategic and there is no reason to doubt that its will deliver sustainable results.

On the other hand Darrin, the operator up north does not have a cooking clue about the business of horseracing and in contrast their strategic announcements include:

- Groundbreaking moves to start the racing schedule mid-morning mid-week to avoid lightning storms;
- Not racing for 2 weeks in August;
- Cut fixtures to create an optical illusion that stakes are increasing;
- Cut costs on gardening services.

This might seem like a crazy question however I will ask.

The above is great for the industry and owners and and. (absolutely great I might add)

My question is... What is in for the punter? Besides the HW free challenge.

Similar question gets asked about how there is a massive hype around the Durban July yet none for the regular punter when these big events occur but rather a certain crowd gets wined and dined.

Not negative. Just a question.

......when the racing improves the punter gets better product and more options to have a bet....yet the nay sayers would argue that fields will be for bigger for poorer horses....but all over the world there are 90%+ of these sorts racing every day in many more races ...growing interest should make those that are almost out stay in....those that already left....be lured back .. .. and those never in now take notice.....local racing is in need of a revival as we have been through the ringer.....many have closed shop and walked away....these guys have an energy to put racing on a better path to grow this industry and improve it....instead of repeating the errors already made....:)

The Jooste era is done and dusted and we now embark on the Bortz and Hollywood era.Only time will tell if money is the right medicine to treat this industry.
Imvho as long as the vast majority of the people in our country have no prolonged interest in this game it will not be able to reach great heights.
Numbers and Soccer will dominate.

.....it is not only money that the industry is short of....it is the right type of people to see that it is spent properly....
drawing a comparison between Jooste and Bortz because of financial means is rather shallow.... as there are big differences in the underlying motivation.....did anyone ever see Jooste here....and how did he improve racing for any one else other than those that pandered to his needs.....some may believe that it is the same as....but the man giving a helping hand is not trying to outright own it entirely....:)

Yeah Duke. We need the ethos, without which nothing will work. How do we get that ethos? There is an ethos in KZN, but the rest of the country, imo, is a big challenge.
