Owners deductions from stakes cheques
3 years 1 week ago
Today all 9 races were 60k races
Stakes as follows
winner 37.5
2nd 12k
3rd 6k
4th 3k
5th 1.5k
If my understanding is correct, deductions as follows:
Trainer 7.5
Jockey 7.5
Groom 1%
VAT 15%
So a loss of 31% off the cheque.
Leaving owner with
winner 25875
2nd 8280
3rd 4140
4th 2070
5th 1035
If that is correct not much of an incentive to send a horse to these meetings.
Stakes as follows

4th 3k

VAT plays no role.
Deductions are 7% trainers - many charge more ( the most that charge additional go 10% and the entitled few go as much as 15% )
Jockeys all 10%
Groom 1%
But the biggest rip are the vets bills. I have heard some horror stories about some of the top brigade that have a horses vet bill on parity with the training bill.
Absolute mugs game

Deducted at source is 7% for trainers, and 7% or 10%for jockeys- most senior jockeys are on 10%. 1% for grooms.
Most trainers will charge an extra commission of 3% on stakes, some of the big yards more. Most will also charge a lot more for feature race stakes. Then there are "stable presents" which used to be at owners discretion, but many will charge extra for that. Those extras are vatable as they are not under the strict definition for zero rated stakes paid by the operator.
Then there are the jockeys' riding fees per race which are funded by the operator out of the potential stakes pot.
So in a R60k race with 14 runners, that's another R14k that could have been added to the gross stake. Hence jockeys are getting up to 30% of the gross stake pot, trainers 10% or more, leaving owners with around 60%, not the 80% that it looks like.

Must be very difficult being an OWNER in the OUT OF SEASON - HIGHVELD SEASON.
Looks like u need 4 x wins a year (at these stakes ) to cover your 1 x year training fee !
