Race 7: Graduation 1200m
In trying to compare these unexposed horses I did an exercise of hand-timing the races won by #’s 2 and 5 over the CD, although a direct comparison really is pointless as they won 3 months apart and the track conditions are clearly very different in Gauteng at different times of the year. However, what I find is that the official time for #5’s victory is completely inaccurate. Hand-timing is itself inaccurate and when I do it I find my times to be about .3 to .4 of a second quicker than the official time, but in this case #5’s time is offically way slower than my hand-timing. Just something to note if you do look at times.
#2 GLITTERING GIRL was heavily supported on debut when winning really easily. She won over the same CD on the same day as Thunderstruck, who won the race before hers and her time was 0.9 seconds slower than his. Interestingly, when she ran 2nd in the Grade 1 Allan Robertson, that race was the one before Thunderstruck won the Grade 1 Gold Medallion and this time her time was only 0.18 seconds slower than his. Like I’ve said, time comparisons are not something to get too hung up about, but it can at least paint a picture of where horses potentially fit in. What it does prove is that #2 GLITTERING GIRL is certainly a high class filly and whilst I’m certainly not going to go rushing in to take 11-10, she has be hard to beat here, even if the unexposed debut winners also have scope.
The debut winners #5 ROCKETS RED GLARE and #6 TYPESET both won very comfortably. I find them difficult to assess and I can’t say categorically that they wouldn’t be able to win this, but they’ll have to be top class sorts in order to turn over the Fav.
#1 FEATHER BOA is a decent filly with a good turn-of-foot, but 1200m is too quick for her now (especially on this track) and she’s going to have a hard time giving 3 kgs to the Fav. I’M AGAINST HER at 5-2.

Rowing in with the double :-
R2) Maggie Smith (14/10) X (R3) Promontory (5/2) (was 9/1 now 15/2)
R2) Maggie Smith (14/10) X (R3) Promontory (5/2) (was 9/1 now 15/2)
Guessing has never been widely acclaimed as a good gambling strategy.

Race 1. Presenter states that Exacta's pays rockets in Australia in the morning. Suggests take an Exacta box, Race 1, Turffontein, 1, 5 and 9. He hopes it pays R4 or R5. Exacta box, 3 horses cost R6. You will be running a loss.
