eyesore get your facts right before you shoot your misinformed mouth off
Phenylbutazone:
Is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and cylo-oxygenase inhibitor. It is a potent pain reliever, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory. In the horse, it is commonly used for lameness, resulting from from soft tissue injury, muscle soreness, bone and joint problems, and laminitis. NSAIDs work by inhibiting the body's production of prostaglandins, thromboxane, and other inflammatory mediators. Some of these actions may be dose dependent. Phenylbutazone may be given intravenously or orally; pain relief and fever reduction usually starts within one to two hours.
THERE IS NOTHING HERE THAT IS SAYS IT IS A PERFORMANCE INHANCER ALSO NOTE THAT GAVIN HAS THE RIGHT TO APPEAL.....CHECK YOUR FACTS AS TO HOW AND WHY IT WAS ADMINISTERED IN THE FIRST PLACE,BEFORE TAKING CHEAP SHOTS!!!!

My point is that it was administered to relieve the horse of pain not to make him run any faster ...the fact that the horse won "clean" after this fiasco proves that it does in fact work even when running after the prescribed time constraints set out by the jockey club,it was never Gavins intention to try improve the horses performance in any clandestine way purely to remedy the problem which he has done,as a trainer that is part of his job discription so refering to him as a "needle merchant" is sickening and the idiot that started the thread should get his facts right!!!

In the good old United States, the equine drug capitol of the known universe, a bute overage is a very minor offense. But I commend your racing authorities for taking a saner view. The fact that your horses do not run on meds makes them very appealing to me as a buyer.

Barry would you not consider purchasing a horse that had been treated with Phenylbutazone??

Bute powder stays in the system days longer than the liquid, by the time the horse raced it would have been out of the system but for small traces. ALL HORSES in their career will have bute administered at sometime.

Whether or not I would consider buying a horse that had been treated with bute is ot exactly the question. The question is a level playing field.

Spoke to an old trainer who has never had a positive.Admits to using various anti inflamatories both powders and injectable.
Rule 1 Says it's simple.,if you need to go so close to a race rather leave the horse at home in the ice boot.
Rule 2 whatever the vet tells you is the excretion period add 48 hours.
Benefit of adhering to the above rules YOU SLEEP AT NIGHT.
