Old Transvaal Racecourses

2 years 7 months ago
#852694
The other day I was driving from work (Factory in Gosforthpark Businesspark) to Newmarket mall to deposit money in my betting account.
Guys and Galls, can you imagine that in a radius of 15km we had 3 racecourses?
Gosforth Park
Turffontein
Newmarket
What the f**k went wrong????????
It must have been like close to paradise. You could pick and choose.
Then there was also Vaal, Bloemfontein and Kimberley.
May all the guys responsible for f**king up all of this, burn in hell!

It is so sad…………

Just to return to your subject heading. There was once a racecourse in Auckland Park, Johannesburg. Where exactly? And where is the spot now that used to be the finish post?

Newmarket was great, racing would be much more exciting if we weren't bored shitless with the same tracks every day

Milnerton was a great track and what a view of the old mountain from it.

....so very sad....but it was not a push from Jabu as reported....there were clever okes inside racing that pushed for corporatization and blaming the transformation bogyman..a transformation which subsequently hardly happened ...but landed up enriching several that picked through the assets and fed the other mushrooms manure....but lord forgive them they did not really know what they were actually doing....other than like birds of carrion picked on the carcass that Highvelt racing had become..... .

Aaah, I just found this on Wiki:

The original site, Auckland Park, offered a boating lake, located where the Country Club Johannesburg is today, as well as a horse racing track, where the University of Johannesburg (formerly RAU) is. (Ok, so when was RAU built?) 1967.

Johannesburg - Auckland Park Race Course. It is now covered by the Auckland Park Campus of the University of Johannesburg.

Racing had an artificial monopoly on legal gambling in SA for decades which led to overinvestment in infrastructure. This included the idiocy of separate facilities for patrons by racial group. The chickens came home to roost when other gambling was legalised. Yes, the committees of the various race clubs were complacent and failed to modernise and improve the offering to patrons, but a significant reduction in the racing footprint was inevitable once casinos etc were legalised.

Yip, PeterD couldn’t have said it better. SA racing then was like Nokia, they did not know what to do next.
