KINGS PLATE TUBTHUMPING
2 years 5 months ago - 2 years 5 months ago
Good morning all.
I was struggling to think on how I could summarize the feelings after the running of the Kings Plate yesterday.
Certainly not one my favourite songs but Tubthumping came to mind on behalf of the connections of Charles Dickens and the punters in general.
"I get knocked down but I get up again".
My overall impression of the day watching exclusive coverage on 240 was as follows:
It was a very celebrity driven presentation with understandably plenty coverage for the sponsors.
The day appeared more fashion oriented than punter friendly.
The Queens Plate/Kings Plate has always had this theme and a bit like Royal Ascot .
As we move towards the MET my request is that the event is more focused on the punting public, with maybe a Cheltenham type approach? Horses and punting vs celebrities and fashion.
There is probably a fine balance but punting supports the game weekly, not only on big days.
If we consider it's the WSB MET and on Hollywood Turf it would be reasonable to have more time spent on betting moves and tote exotics updates rather than some gorgeous face that has never been to a racetrack.
Mind you if Francesca Cumani is free we have the best of both worlds.
As far as a race by race feedback :
Pacific Green was my best bet.
The ladies race was a good initiative but when I understood the concept I did reduce my punt .
Night Tiger well done to Sigenu.
Garden Tatjana beat the well fancied fav but well done to Stergio and his partners, in addition bred by Peter D.
Mr Cobb was a major early blow to pick 6 and Soumillion would have been a better result.
Princess Calla was a good winner and it's great that Mario Ferreira has a well deserved star.
Soumillion gave Desert Miracle a good ride and will continue to follow.
Rascallion has always been a good a horse and won an exciting race.
Make it Snappy was again impressive for the HW syndicate but sad to see Captains Ransom beat.
Al Muthana brought the track from euphoria to a funeral vibe when downing CD .
This was with the exception of Frodo(Eben) who has been telling the forum for weeks that Al was the one plus Elvis (Barry) and Bob were the only ones shouting.
Needless to say Frodo also won the compo.
We did have a ninth and ten race and also difficult to catch Future Swing or Crome Yellow.
The MET has a rather open appearance and look forward to our new challenge where Sparkling Water caught my eye.
"We get knocked down but we get up again"
Good Punting 👍

I think Charles Dickens ran a super race.
He put Jet Dark and Kommet easily in their place.
On the Day a Top Miler with GR1 credentials lowered his colors.
CD drifted outwards costing him the neck. Bernies panel beaters also added to Al Muthana performance. I doubt Aldo would have smashed a Young three year old.
Will be interesting to hear Bass post race notes.

You need a bit time to reflect on the hype as we were desperately looking for a new hero.
As you mentioned Sly a great performance and I would certainly love to own a share in CD with a bright future ahead.
There were a few factors between win and loss
Just beaten and did beat the obvious trifecta horses running 1/2/3 .....AL spoilt the show.
The jock had a weight concern
The winner receives a few extra smacks
The going faster on outside
Etc etc
Plus remember CD was NOT 5/10 it was as short as 1/5 .......at the death and basically unbackable.
We live to fight another day and CD will be money on for its next start ......

Re: KINGS PLATE TUBTHUMPING

......most punters fail to realize that horses are not machines and there are several factors of things going awry and I have learned from an early age to hardly ever go for broke on an on the nose bet on a so called racing certainty....and since the advent of the P6 I hardly ever banker a horse and rather play wide for a smaller %....so in the leg where most bankered CD... I had CD JD Russian Rock(my loon just in case he does not lose his head which is now the norm) and the scratching....earlier I had doubled up with Princess Calla + scratching and in the 1st leg Mr Cobbs was my 3rd selection of 5 horses... was not that displeased with Al Muthana blowing me out... as I arsed the trifecta that covered all my day's play. Had Al Muthana been my type of poison he would have been included but he was not for me....but would never tell any one that gave him a squeak that they were smoking their socks....as I have seen many many bigger shocks.....as years back my close punting mates never took me racing with them again after I backed a horse to beat Empress Club to end her winning streak.....and also when I was a big Galileo fan but backed Fantastic Light to beat him in Ireland...so it was no shock that CD was upstaged ....but feel that there could have been a much different outcome had CD been allowed to tack towards the outside rail instead of correcting him to go inside.....I would never have lasted as a horseman or even as a part owner as I soon realized that the human element far to often wants to override what a horse sometimes instinctively wants to do....

@ Dave ,I respect the fact that every Clanner has a right to his and her own view point, but to congratulate a Mario F on his win, in my opinion is akin to celebrating corruption and state capture, this individual's company has been
severely implicated in the Zondo Commision report and a subsequent punitive court order, Google TMM,
Perhaps this is not the same Mario "'PRASSA "" F that I am referring to If so I apologise, but like Mr Roy M in racing ,IMO we are praising the rotten apples.

I think Charles Dickens ran a top top race...no shame in 2nd considering where a proven top class miler like Jet Dark finished relatively and from draw 9 relative to Al Muhtana from draw 5...

......the draw was immaterial for all those off the pace....Bernie chose the right path and thus won the race....
....I just wish that the other Maingard runner I labeled in Race 3 had a jock that kept a straight line from draw 11 and did not elect to tour the whole straight course.....:S

I agree there was no disgrace in CD's performance (who knows what would have happened if the jock chose the 'better' going on the outside - even so he still beat the high-class JD and Kommet at WFA) - but his run imo is inferior to that of Horse Chestnut when he won the race
I am not clear in my mind yet on what will happen in the MET (for me I think Al Muthana won't run and if he did I'd be opposing him over 2000) - I do not really rate the performances of Make It Snappy, Universal and even Rascallion - but have to admit that for me Rascallion can improve further; an interesting runner would be Silver Darling and if I were the connections I'd be considering the MET over 2000 as opposed to Majorca over 1600 - especially if Captain's Ransom is going to have another go at the Majorca
