Re: HOLLYWOODBETS GREYVILLE MONDAY 25 SEPTEMBER
1 year 8 months ago.....maybe this is a KZN poly thing.....prepping horses to win a maiden.. ..that 1 in the 1st may never showed any toe and took 10+ runs and a bigger trip in order to get a crack at the minimum trip....:S .
.....horse must have thought.....better win today or they gonna make me run around the whole damn course again....
If you go on Merit ratings, the winner and second horse where the two lowest merit rated horses in the field.
Let me educate you - the key is in the description of the race 'Maiden Handicap' - in other words 'a Handicap for horses that have not won' - so Merit Ratings in this case are neither here nor there, as the horses are weighted according to their ratings
Exactly the same as in a normal handicap race isn't it?
Enough bad runs and you could be getting 5 or more kg's against another maiden but you have made sure the horse runs badly and drops in MR compared to a horse that keeps on placing.
Your maiden horse could have the exact ability as the maiden you are now facing in a maiden handicap but your merit rating is lower because you made sure it never was really fit or you been running it over the wrong distance in it's previous races.
Now you find the right maiden handicap getting weight from the rest of the field and you bring your horse to the races fit, over the correct distance and tell the jockey to give it a decent ride, not run 3 wide,go too early or too late,or follow the wrong horse into the race, which you have been doing in it's previous races.
Opens 20-1,put your money down as you know it's fit and it's MR shouldn't be this low and bang you hopefully get the cash.
Sounds far fetched but I'm sure some are doing this.

One of the riders of the microphone reckons there are 160 people on course today. It makes him happy……………..

I think there is a future for you in Politics - lots of explanation without arguing the point - which is - and I quote .....

Anyway enough fun for today

Maybe 6 year old maidens should retire. They probably not keen on racing.

I do not know how many horses in South Africa have won their very first time as a 6yo.
His Nibs in the 1990s won its maiden as a 5yo in Bloemfontein as only Bloemfontein and Port Elizabeth allowed 5yo maidens at that time.
His Nibs went on to win numerous times including a hat trick of wins including Greyville 1900 with the late Gift Funeka aboard who also rode him in the Durban July thus becoming the first black jockey to ride in the race.

......His Nibs was an import from New Zealand and got a late start to local racing....but I doubt that he could not race at a major centre as the ruling was that one had to only be sent to the minor centre if a horse had 10 consecutive unplaced runs in it's 3-4 year career and only then could no longer race in a major centre.....some records show that His Nibs had only 11 runs in his rather short local racing career....

@ Muthi. Yes His Nibs was imported. The trainer, Maharaj had quite a few imports at that time.
The 5yo maiden exclusion in the big centres in my opinion definitely applied.
They had another horse, Fair Perfection who has a 5yo broke its maiden in Kimberley and was based in KZN. It ran in the higher divisions thereafter due to it being suited to longer trips. It even beat a high class field over the staying trip.

A racehorse is just another animal. I don’t think any horse knew that it had just won a race be it a PE maiden or the Epsom Derby. For me, no horse is “keen” on running any race as galloping is his defence mechanism against predators. No fun in that.
