# Turffontein Standside Thursday 30 November 2023 – Comments by David Thiselton

RACE 1

Preview: 9 PHANTOM EXPRESS is knocking on the door and is drawn on the right side by trends 10 GREAT BARRIER showed good ability band now returns from an eight month layoff from a favourable draw by trends. 3 JOKER MAN returns from a five month layoff after two good runs and he has a fair middle draw. 5 MAJESTIC PALACE is by Potala Palace and is a half-brother to the Gr 1-winning sprinter and now sire Master Archie so can perhaps be given another chance after a dismal debut as he has been gelded (9-10-3-5)

RACE 2

Preview: 10 TO THE RESCUE was outpaced over 1160m on debut but stayed on strongly and this well-bred sort by Gimmethegreenlight out of the talented Hashtagyolo will relish the step up in trip. JUST NUISANCE is knocking on the door and now has pole position over a step up in trip she should relish 11 WELL LOVED had some support on debut and should improve but he does have a tough draw. 9 OFFICER IN COMMAND ran a fair race over 1800m last time and can earn here. 4 THOMAS RAINWATER has not been far off and can earn in this line up (10-2-11-9-4)

RACE 3

Preview: 5 SPRINGER is knocking on the door and enjoyed this trip last time but she now has to overcome a wide draw. 6 OUTER DIMENSION has shown some ability but also has a wide draw. 2 SHE’S A KLAWER is a long time maiden but is usually thereabouts. 8 VENETIAN MOONLIGHT was beaten 4,10 lengths by Springer last time but there is a reversal in draw fortunes. (5-6-2-8 )

RACE 4

Preview: 1 SAY YES was not disgraced last time she went this trip against a top class filly in the making and on that form she is the one to beat. 5 SPECIAL CHARM has a good record over middle distances and is competitively merit rated. 3 APACHE FIGHTER was beaten 1,25 lengths by Special Charm when they last met and is only half-a-kilogram better off. 6 BALLROOM BLISS has been disappointing lately but has a chance if bouncing back (1-5-3-4-6)

RACE 5

Preview: 1 WITBLITS won well when stepped up to this trip and as a progressive type can get the hat-trick despite an eight point raise. 3 ROSY LEMON is in fine form and proved she is up to her merit rating last time. 10 SILVER HUNT looks capable of improvement from a good draw. 9 BE REAL has 6,25 lengths to make up on Witblits and is now 5,5kg better off if apprentice claims are ignored. (1-3-10-9)

RACE 6

Preview: 3 RULE BOOK is lazy at home so needs his racing and he should now be cherry ripe and he should relish the course and distance. 1 BATTLEGROUND is a talented stayer who must always be respected. 5 NAMAQUA BLOSSOM has always looked to be a classy stayer and she should come into her own this season should be in the shake up (3-1-5-2)

RACE 7

Preview: WYZEACT (3) returns from a layoff but looks promising and is drawn on the right side by trends. RED HOT ROSE (5) has to be included on form and as the best weighted. ELEGANT ICE (6) is drawn on the right side and is only 1,5kg out with the best weighted on official merit ratings. CORNWALL (1) impressed last time so is going the right way but he is 8kg out with the best weighted. THE MAURITIAN (2) GARLANDSOFGREENERY (8 ) and DREAMLAND (4) are hard to ignore in a tough race. (3-5-6-1-2-8-4)

RACE 8

Preview: 8 REAL RELIEF ran well from a wide draw last time and was up against good fields without being disgraced before that. 2 GOLDEN PROSPECT is well drawn and has fallen to a competitive merit rating. 10 SUNSHINE DAY is up against the boys but is drawn in pole and was just three lengths behind subsequent Gr 3 Fillies Mile winner Gimme A Nother last time so has to be a contender. 4 TOFFAS is course and distance suited and well drawn 6 ARCHIMIDES has a plum draw over what looks to be his best distance (8-2-10-4-6)

Hello Everyone

Thursday 30th November 2023 ... Turffontein Standside

12:25 Race 01: MAIDEN PLATE (For all Maidens) - Distance 1160m

10 Great Barrier .. has raced alongside some very good horses who have gone on to compete in graded races, has been drawn on the outside which is advantageous but comes off a break of 245 days which is the only concern, if not in need of the run then can run away from them all, if needing the run then probably the fav 9 Phantom Express will be hard to beat. Watch the horses go down to the post and keep an ear for comments from the stable for clues before making any moves.

13:00 Race 02: MAIDEN PLATE (For all Maidens) - Distance 1600m

8 La Moohal .. has been turned out quickly in a week's time which the stable doesn't do often, probably must've shown something back home which might have encouraged this move. Drifting alarmingly in the betting market but has potential to take on a field of this nature.

10 To The Rescue .. is getting hammered in the market, was very lethargic on its debut over 1160m and very wayward in the running, steps upto a mile with the country's greatest jockey in the irons, looks a bit doubtful but have to respect the money pouring in and the confidence of the connections.

The other horse in the betting ran over 1400m at Vaal Main track and clocked a bit inferior timings compared to 8 La Moohal who also ran same day in different race but same distance and hence ignoring it.

13:35 Race 03: MAIDEN PLATE (For Maiden Filles & Mares) - Distance 1600m

5 Springer .. Last run jockey felt something amiss and the vet said you've got to be kidding but the book makers are not taking any chances.
14 Patches Of Grey .. First timer who is getting lot of support in the market.
6 Outer Dimension .. If last run can be forgiven then this filly is bang in, looks much better than a few with blinkers removed, dark horse.

Have a good day at the races

Warm Regards

I agree it looks a punter-friendly card ..... thoughts -

R1: Should be fought out by the 3 fancied runners - not sure in which order though - Line Barracks to complete the Quartet

R2: Just Nuisance has had a few tries, so To the Rescue looks the right one over this trip - perhaps La Moohal can improve more in his 3rd start

R3: Springer looks very short in the betting given a wide draw and I'm not convinced about the trip either; first-timer Patches of Grey is finding some support in the market; Venetian Moonlight tries blinkers, while A Touch of Sugar has a good draw and did run a fair race in her first local start; Outer Dimension also has fair form but a wide draw won't make it any easier

R4: Very competitive and any of the 7 can win imo

R5: Witblits showed last time that she gets this trip and cantered in so could defy an 8-point rise in the handicap; Rosy Lemon has found form and looks like a danger from Turn the Page

R6: Battleground ready to win again and only danger imo is Rule Book - both should prefer the step up in trip

R7: Garlandsofgreenery good debut win and even the inside draw may not stop her repeating at these weights; there are capable fillies like Red Hot Rose, Elegant Ice and Cullinan Blue in the race, so the favorite could have her work cut out

R8: Golden Corn once ran 4 lengths off the Summer Cup winner Royal Victory and has dropped 13 points since in the ratings, so looks value here, but Real Relief looks also very capable and will be a hard nut to crack

Enjoy B)
