6 months 2 weeks ago - 6 months 2 weeks ago
The National Horseracing Authority of Southern Africa confirms the reported Prohibited Substance findings.
AMIGO was disqualified, and Trainer L W Goosen signed an Admission of Guilt and was fined the sum of R26 000 (Twenty-Six Thousand Rand) for a contravention of Rule 73.2.3 in that a specimen which was collected from this horse prior to the running Race 4 on 13 October 2024, at Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse, disclosed upon analysis the presence of Flunixin (Class 4).
QUANTIFIER was disqualified, and Trainer Gareth van Zyl signed an Admission of Guilt and was fined the sum of R45 000 (Forty-Five Thousand Rand) for a contravention of Rule 73.2.3 in that a specimen which was collected from this horse prior to the running of Race 5 on 19 October 2024, at Turffontein Racecourse, disclosed upon analysis the presence of Furosemide (Class 4).
When assessing penalty, careful consideration was given to the class of substance, the respective Trainer’s penalty record of prior prohibited substance contraventions during the last five-year period, the concentration of the prohibited substance in the specimen and the status of the race.

See that certain people are still commenting at SP on this matter and are claiming that this type of "doping" must be stamped out.....yet this is still solely a major locally over prescribed veterinary practice that has gone on unchecked for the longest time.... one has to then ponder that the vets and NHRA are in league to ensure a constant revenue stream....huh
Flunixin is used primarily for short-term treatment of moderate pain and inflammation. It has been used to treat abdominal pain in horses, to decrease signs of sepsis in horses
Flunixin is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), analgesic , and antipyretic used in horses, cattle and pigs. It is often formulated as the meglumine salt .
In the United States, it is regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and like in RSA may only be lawfully distributed and administered by a licensed veterinarian.
Because it targets the inflamed tissue, flunixin is mainly used for colic pain, musculoskeletal pain, and ocular pain.

The majority of these offences are...but regulations are in place for a reason, so if we don't have them in place there will be more malpractice

6 months 2 weeks agoLasix is allowed in SA horseracing, so your statement is false.. You can't race with Lasix, but you can train with it.. I reckon it's been withdrawal times.....and as for the fine for Lasix (Florosamide) found for young Van Zyl.....he should know better....there is no place for this substance in local racing.....the fine should have been bigger....oh my

.....and that is the major problem as it is also being used as a purging dieretic to help flush other medications.....and before anyone gets on the cure for "bleeding" angle....yes it may lessen the occurrence....but in order to get full benefit one has to administer it pre-race....so why then be allowed prep and train with it and then leave a horse exposed in a race without it.....the penalty should be much higher as it is also a well known performance enhancer.....

......what is even more puzzling is that Quantifier finished 2nd last and out of the stake money so no real gain in the performance....then again the race was over 2600m and at altitude....so not an ideal event to try and expose a horse that may need to be aided and trained with Lasix....
