Frankie Dettori will showcase his talents in Argentina's Derby and Oaks at Buenos Aires
FRANKIE DETTORI will showcase his talents in South America next week after accepting an offer to compete in Argentina's Derby and Oaks races at Buenos Aires.
The jockey will ride in Argentina for the first time at Palermo on November 15 on one of the biggest days in the South American racing calendar.
The Gran Premio Nacional (Derby) over 1m4½f on the dirt is the highlight of a glittering card at city-centre Palermo, where meetingshabitually feature 15 or more races and last from about noon until late evening.
“I was asked six months ago if I was interested in riding in the Derby and Oaks,” said Dettori. “I couldn't give an answer at the time but then I was available. I think Iam on an unbeaten filly in the Oaks.
“There are five Group 1 races on the day and I should pick up some other rides,” he added. “As far as I know they might even name a race after me. I know Laffit Pincay is going as guest of honour so it is a pretty big day.
“I have been to Argentina before with Sheikh Mohammed. We stopped by for a couple of days on our way from Melbourne to the Kentucky Derby. I did go to the track very briefly but I didn't ride. It was a very quick visit.”
While heis in Buenos Aires, Dettori is hoping to make time for a visit to another major sporting venue. “I told them I was looking forward to going as long as they made sure they get me to the football on Sunday!” he said.
“The two big teams are River Plate and Boca Juniors so I am hoping they can organise that for me.”
Dettori, who reached a new landmark when landing the Breeders' Cup Classic on Raven's Pass, has no further commitments in Britain this year but will still perform on the international stageand is expected to be in Rome on Sunday to partner Nahoodh in the Premio Roma.
At the end of the month he is due to compete in a jockeys' tournament in Johannesburg as a member of the European team that will take on South Africa's top riders.
