Dear MR SCOTT,
"YES WE CAN" is the phrase on everyone's lips after the momentous US election. These three tiny words are truly inspiring - and one can only hope that the diverse players in our racing industry will one day be chanting them in unison. Is it not time for all of us to stand together to take this wonderful sport to greater heights? Mike de Kock, South Africa's greatest racing ambassador, has been quoted as saying that it is constant negativity that holds the game back.
November 29 2008 is an opportunity for the industry to come together and support South African jockeys as they take on some of the world's best. I hope all of you reading this will make an effort to be part of the crowd in Turffontein grandstand when the 12 highly talented athletes take on each other. My plea to you is to help revive the sport on the Highveld by creating a "July" and "Met" atmosphere at the Big T. An exciting new development is the new parade ring in front of the main grandstand, which will be opened on Steinhoff Summer Cup day. It will create a great vibe on the racecourse by bringing horses and jockeys much closer to the racegoers.
Congratulations to Peter Naidoo and Michael de Broglio, who have been re-elected to the National Board of the Racing Association. The Northern Cape/Free State committee welcomes Jaco Cloete and Gavin Schafer. Our thanks to all those who participated in the elections, and we wish them well in the future.
The Elevation Room is fully booked for the Summer Cup and RA members who have reserved tables are reminded to pay their R350 per head before November 15 to avoid disappointment on the day. There will be a gate charge at Turffontein for the big meeting, so members are reminded to wear their badges to gain free admission. Parking for RA members will be in the Marble Arch area, with access via the Marble Arch gate. Arrive early to avoid the queues.
The RA AGM is on November 26 at Turffontein racecourse, starting at 16h00, and you are all encouraged to attend.
Pray for good weather on Steinhoff Summer Cup day and I hope to see you at the races.
