Aussie sprint star struck dead by lightning
A RISING star on the Australian sprinting scene has been killed by a bolt of lightning in what his devastated owner described as a "zillion to one chance".
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Sunburnt Land - a five-year-old son of Scenic - suffered a direct hit while housed in a paddock at his owner David Moodie's property near Woodend in Victoria on Thursday night.
Winner of eight of his 18 starts for trainer Mathew Sunburnt Land was beaten only a length into third behind Swick in last weekend's Group 1 Patinack Farm Classic at Flemington.
"A million - no, a zillion - to one chance," said Moodie in the Herald. "He was hit directly on the wither. There are burn marks on the wither and at the bottom of one of his legs where it exited.
"It had to be him, didn't it? I've got about 120 horses and almost double that in cattle up there. If it had hit a cow, well, you'd feel upset, but this has just done me over. He only went out to his normal paddock on Monday for a spell. I just put him in with a couple of mates."
