Just watching on the box, will post soon.

Draws for Summer Cup and Jockeys’ Challenge

The six riders to represent South Africa in the International Jockeys’ Challenge on Steinhoff Summer Cup day on Saturday 29 November will be presented with national colours at a special function at Turffontein on Wednesday night, when the draws for barrier positions in the Summer Cup and mounts in the Challenge races will also take place.

The connections of all runners in the Steinhoff Summer Cup and the four International Challenge races are invited to attend.

The function, which will be televised live on Tellytrack alongside a race meeting at Kempton in England, starts at 7.30pm and will be hosted by TV sports presenter Neil Andrews.

The draw for barrier positions in the R2-million Summer Cup will take place first and will be followed by the presentation of national colours to the six South African riders and team manager Michael Roberts. The colours will be presented by Phumelela CEO South Africa David Attenborough and Larry Wainstein, chairman of the Racing Association.

In order to equalise the chances of the two teams of riders in the International Jockeys’ Challenge, runners in all four races will be seeded from one to 12 by the National Horseracing Authority’s Vee Moodley and Computaform tipster Rod Bechus.

A toss of a coin will decide which of the teams draws seeds 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11 in the first and third Challenge races and seeds 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 in the second and fourth races.

And to ensure that a rider does not end up with lowly seeded horses in all four races, the three jockeys who draw the lowest seeded horses in the first and third events will automatically draw for three highest-seeded horses available to their teams in the other two races.

PHUMELELA MEDIA RELEASE

SUBJECT: Steinhoff International Summer Cup draw

DATE: Wednesday 17 November 2008

RELEASED BY: Phumelela Gaming and Leisure Limited

Trainer Charles Laird only got Smart Banker into the Steinhoff International Summer Cup at the 11th hour, but sadly the Strike Smartly gelding did not fare too well when the barrier positions were drawn last night.
Jockey Anton Marcus could not hide his disappointment when his mount drew at No 19 for the R2 million Grade 1 race to be run at Turffontein over 2000m on Saturday 29 November.
However, Laird did have something to smile about when Charity Mile November Handicap winner Likeithot drew at No 5 for the big race.
Trainer Mike de Kock will not be too upset that Rudra will jump from draw No 10 and could come in one place if second reserve runner Angel Flight fails to make the line-up.
Durban-based Thandolwami, runner-up in the Charity Mile, was the first name out the hat but trainer Craig Eudey will not be too impressed that his charge will start the race from barrier No 18.
Pole position went to Brian Wiid’s Gliding High, who was placed fifth in the Charity Mile and will be trying this distance for the first time.
Also last night, the six jockeys who will be competing in the International Jockeys’ Challenge were presented with their Protea colours, along with manager Michael Roberts and reserve rider Anthony Delpech. Captain Mark Khan expressed the views of teammates Weichong Marwing, Anton Marcus, Karl Neisius, Piere Strydom and Kevin Shea, when he said they were greatly honoured to be recognised for their achievements and being allowed to represent the country.
They will come up against Frankie Dettori, Mick Kinane, Darryll Holland, Damien Oliver, Mallesh Narredu and Christophe Soumillon in a four-race test at the Summer Cup meeting.
Meanwhile De Kock has brought out the big guns for this year’s Grade 2 Unitrans Dingaans over 1600m at Turffontein.
With some of the best jockeys in the world participating at the meeting, De Kock has engaged Frankie Dettori to ride Honour In Gold in the R500 00 Dingaans. But he also has three other runners contesting the race, including Golden Horseshoe winner Forest Path, to be ridden by Kevin Shea, Ant Of Agasta with Anthony Delpech up, and Directorate with Raymond Danielson in the saddle.
Charles Laird runs Oracy, an impressive winner of his only race, and as Anton Marcus has taken the ride, one must assume he is the stable elect. However, Laird has engaged Weichong Marwing to ride the impressive Sir Lowry, who features prominently in much of the three-year-old form.

PHUMELELA & RACING ASSOCIATION MEDIA RELEASE

SUBJECT: Draw for International Jockeys’ Challenge

DATE: Thursday 20 November

RELEASED BY: Phumelela Gaming and Leisure Limited

Italian-born jockey Frankie Detorri is renowned for his joyful demeanour but even he would have had a wider-than-normal smile on his face after the draw was made at Turffontein on Wednesday night for the International Jockeys’ Challenge.
Detorri (Italy), Darryll Holland (England), Mick Kinane (Ireland), Christophe Soumillon (France), Mallesh Narredu (India) and Damien Oliver (Australia) will take on six of the best South African jockeys in a four-race test at Turffontein on 29 November, the day on which the R2 million Steinhoff International Summer Cup over 2000m will take place.
The South African team comprises Mark Khan (captain), Anton Marcus, Piere Strydom, Kevin Shea, Karl Neisius and Weichong Marwing. Michael Roberts will manage the team and Anthony Delpech is the reserve rider.
Dettori drew likely favourite Kingdom Come in the first leg, the evergreen Connnoisseur in the second, another probable favourite in On The Bluff in the third leg, and Caribbean Coast, who had a great run last time out after being gelded, in the fourth leg.
But this is a team affair and even if one jockey manages to shine in all four races, it will be the team which accumulates the most points that will finally win the Challenge.
The winning rider will get 15 points, 12 points for second, 10 points for third, 8 points for fourth, 7 points for fifth, 6 points for sixth, 5 points for seventh, 4 points for eighth, 3 points for ninth, 2 points for 10th, 1 point for 11th and nil to the rider who finishes last.
While there are reserve runners who will come in should there be any early withdrawals, should a jockey not get a run in any race, his team will be awarded six points. The horses were seeded and the draw constructed in such a manner to ensure that no jockey or team would end up with four poor rides.
So that has made the outcome extremely tight and it will be tricky to calculate which team will come out on top at the end of the day.

The fields and riders for the four International Jockeys’ Challenge races.

Doyen, with all due respect to the ' captain ' what does he do, what is his function ?
Racing is an individual sport & not a team sport - unless KB.Shea & company plan to "box" Frankie on the rail so he can't get out.

where have we seen this before ?
