While I understand that SA racing is under pressure to ensure that the average MR of horses contesting GR1 events needs to justify keeping the GR1 status, i am at a loss when it comes to the 2YR olds.
Maybe, just in general, i am confused as to the overall programme, while it is great to have a R5mill sales race, must it be slap bang in the middle of the main season? Not wanting to allocate blame, but couldn't the planning have been done a bit better?
There are now only two GR1 events for 2YR olds in South Africa, The Gold Medallion 1200m and the Premiers Trophy 1600m. Not much reason or confidence to buy fillies at the sales.
