Report: USA Sunday

Sunland Park New Mexico Racing Commission Handicap 6f, dirt, 3yo+ New Mexio-bred f/m

PEPPERS PRIDE took her modern-day record winning streak to 19 on Sunday, with a near six-length victory at Sunland Park.

The Joel Marr-trained mare also took her career earnings past the million-dollar mark by remaining unbeaten.

TheUS record of 23 consecutive victories was set by Leviathan, a foal of 1793. It was thought before Sunday that Peppers Pride was unlikely to take on that mark as owner Joe Allen had said it might be her final appearance - he was "95 per cent sure" to retire her.

However, he may now be having second thoughts, if trainer Marr's post-race comments are any indication.

"It's going to be hard to decide [to retire her] after such a terrific race," he said. "I want to thank everybody who has supported her, from the two-dollar bettors to the grooms and my family. She is the best horse I have ever touched."

In Sunday's race, jockey Carlos Madeira put Peppers Pride in striking distance early, made a wide move on the turn, and took the lead approaching the furlong marker.

"We had a great trip," said Madeira. "She exploded late when I asked her. She gave me everything I could ever want."

Peppers Pride won at the first time of asking at Ruidoso Downs on July 16, 2005. All of her races, including 14 stakes, have been against New Mexico-bred fillies and mares.
