Turner hopes for a 'bit of luck' in her century bid

HAYLEY TURNER was on Monday night hoping for a "bit of luck" as she went into the final two days of the year needing just two more to become the first woman to ride 100 winners in a year.

She took a giant stride towards her century with a double aboard Dover Street Art and Chalice Welcome at Great Leighs.

She is now just two short of the century and bookmakers William Hill cut her from 9-4 at the start of the day to 8-11 to complete the feat.

British racing's most successful female rider now faces a busy 36 hours in her hunt for the ton and will take in two meetings on Tuesday before finishing her fabulous 2008 campaign at Lingfield on New Year's Eve.

She said on Monday: "Today has gone very well and I've got a chance of getting to 100. I've got eight rides tomorrow and a few more on New Year's Eve. I just need a bit of luck and need the horses to run well.

"If it happens, it happens - but I've had a fantastic season. If not, it's not the end of the world and it would maybe be the target for next year.

Ditto!

Dave wouldn't it be great if Hayley could go over to SA for a few weeks, I'm sure if a few owners/trainers supported her it would be an excellent publicity opportunity for all concerned.

What say the Clan???

might be some good value to be had at wolverhampton tonight.. with haley going for the winner she needs, there is bound to be an influx off cash for her rides, therefore inflating the prices of the other runners

Well done Haley!!!!!

HAYLEY TURNER created racing history at Wolverhampton on Tuesday evening when Mullitovermaurice provided the jockey with her 100th winner of the calendar year. Turner is the first ever female jockey in Britain to notch the century.

Turner, who was out of luck in the first race on Kilkenny Bay, was up with the pace throughout on the 7-1 chance and kicked for home off the final bend. There was some interference between Turner's mount and Shane Kelly aboard Special Bond, and although the stewards did not call an enquiry, they did hand Turner a two day ban for careless riding, (January 13-14).

The ban will be of little concern to Turner, who came back to the winners enclosure to a rousing welcome from the crowd, and the jockey said of the milestone:

"All credit to my agent [Guy Jewell] for getting me there, I honestly didn't think I'd get there but Guy insisted I could and kept me going.

"I've had over 1,000 rides this year, so I'm ready for a break! I'm riding at Lingfield tomorrow but I'll be taking the first half of January off and then go from there."

Michael Bell who has provided Turner with some of her more memorable rides this season, including Furnace and The Betchworth Kid, acknowledged her success when speaking to At The Races, he said:

"It's a fantastic achievement. From day one she was thoroughly dedicated and very determined, she had tunnel vision on being a success. She's given her all and her success is richly deserved."

Earlier in the afternoon Turner gained winner number 99 aboard the David Elsworth-trained Newlyn Art at Lingfield, and the trainer was quick to praise her.

He said: "She is a very honest girl who gets on with the job and makes very few mistakes."

In the wake of her achievement, Hayley Tuner has been quoted at 100-1 to be crowned Sports Personality ofthe Year for 2009
