I first came to know of Helen Suzman when I was at High School in Durban & had joined the ANC Youth League (circa 1957), under Fathima Meer & Sam Kikine. Helen was the lone 'white' voice that supported our cause- for that I reserve extreme honour & admiration for her.
It is a pity she did not step out of her capitalist umbrella & join the likes of Joe Slovo, Ruth First, Braam Fischer, etc in the field.
But, she did her bit without fear, often being humiliated, and even being tarnished with anti-Semitic attacks. Despite it all, she earned her not only world-wide human rights recognition, but even that of struggle icons like Madiba. That alone says a lot for the 'lone ranger'!
Go well, Shalom, Samaya Hanthla!
