SUBJECT: Sophomore, Fillies and Mares Challenge for Eastern Cape

More than R1.4 million will be up for grabs with the staging of the Eastern Cape Sophomore Challenge and the Eastern Cape Eastern Cape Fillies and Mares Challenge for 2009.
Stake money of R825 000 has been set aside for the Sophomore Challenge, a series of three races for three-year-old horses. Besides the total stake monies of R575 000 on offer, a Challenge bonus of R250 000 will be paid to the winning connections, should a horse win all three races.
In the event of one three-year-old not winning all three races, a consolation bonus of
R75 000 will be paid to the connections of the horse accumulating the most points, provided the horse participates in all three races and accumulates a minimum of 13 points.
The first race in the series is the R100 000 Ibhayi Handicap, to be run over 1400m at Arlington on 13 March. The second leg will be the R125 000 East Cape Guineas (Listed) over 1600 metres at Fairview on 10 April, with the final leg, the R350 000 New Turf Carriers East Cape Derby (Grade 3), being run at Arlington on 10 May, over 2400 metres.
Over R600 000 has been set aside for this series of three races for fillies and mares, to be called the R610 000 Eastern Cape Fillies and Mares Challenge. Besides the total stake monies of R360 000 on offer, a Challenge bonus of R250 000 will be paid to the winning connections, should a filly or mare win all three races.
In the event of one filly or mare not winning all three races, a consolation bonus of
R75 000 will be paid to the connections of the filly or mare accumulating the most points, provided the horse participates in all three races and accumulates a minimum of 13 points.
The first race in the series is the R120 000 East Cape Breeders Stakes, to be run over
1200 metres at Fairview, on 10 July. The second leg will be the R120 000 East Cape
Paddock Stakes, over 1600 metres at Fairview on 31 July, with the final leg, the
R120 000 Jockey Club Stakes, being run at Arlington on 28 August, over 2000 metres.
All three races carry Listed status.
The final leg is named in recognition of the fact that the Jockey Club (now the National Horseracing Authority) was founded in Port Elizabeth almost 130 years ago
