De Kock eyes Group 3 with previous winners

MIKE De Kock has saddled two winners so far at this year's Dubai carnival - and either or both of them could be in action on Thursday at Nad Al Sheba in the Group 3 feature.

The Al Rashidiya, the first Group race of the Dubai season on turf, is run over the same course and distance of the Dubai Duty Free on World Cup night at approximately 1m1f.

De Kock has won the $200,000 event twice in the past with subsequent Duty Free dead-heater Right Approach (2004) and Wolf Whistle (2005).

This time around he had entered last week's sprint winner Hunting Tower, first-night handicap scorer Silver Mist and last year's UAE Derby runner-up Royal Vintage.

The last-named has an alternative entry in the Listed Jebel Ali on Friday.

Other possibles include former Jane Chapple-Hyam-trained Traffic Guard, who is now with Herman Brown.

The South African has also entered new recruit Oracle West, a multiple carnival winner for De Kock and runner-up in the Group 1 Sheema Classic in 2007.

Ireland took the racelast year with Lord Admiral and has a pair of possibles in Via Galilei (Jim Bolger) and Finicius (Eoin Griffin).

Although there are no British possibles in the main event, George Margarsons' old favourite Young Mick and Wise Dennis, twice a carnival scorer last term for Alan Jarvis, feature elsewhere.

With another mammoth card in prospect, the Queen's Banknote needs seven to come out to get a run in the 1m turf handicap.

THE Queen will have her first UAE runner on Thursday, when the Andrew Balding-trained Banknote lines up in the 1m turf handicap which concludes a seven-race card at Nad Al Sheba

The seven-year-old entire son of Zafonic, a Group 3 winner in Germany in 2007, won at Lingfield just before Christmas when beating Philario.

Franny Norton, in the saddle then, retains the partnership and the horse looked in great shape when working on the Nad Al Sheba turf course on Saturday morning.

He is set to face the maximum 15 rivals, including theAlan Jarvis-trained Wise Dennis, who was a dual carnival winner last year. He also worked on Saturday under regular local partner Ted Durcan.

Kevin Manning will partner the Jim Bolger-trained Akua'Ba in the same race, in which Saeed Bin Suroor saddles River Tiber.

Unwell Dettori gives up Nad Al Sheba quartet

FRANKIE DETTORI is set to miss his four intended mounts at Nad Al Sheba on Thursday as the jockey felt unwell on Wednesday.

Dettori was due to partner Kirklees in the Group 3 but that contender will now be ridden by Ted Durcan and Darragh O'Donohoe will now take over the reins on his original mount Familiar Territory.

Durcan also takes over on Fateh Field in the 1m dirt and Richard Mullen picks up Irish Mayhem in the fourth contest leaving Mick Kinane to take the ride on Dettori's remaining spare, River Tiber, in the last.

Young Mick 'in great nick' for Dubai debut

Preview: Dubai, Thursday

Nad Al Sheba: Dubai Potline Trophy (Turf handicap) 1m4f

George Margarson, trainer of Young Mick
"He looks in great nick and has taken the journey very well. He arrived race fit as he ran at Lingfield earlier this month. He breezed on Wednesday and went well, though I could not see him as it was very foggy!"

Fernando Jara, jockey of Far From Old
"He ran well last time and will have improved from that so has a chance."

Doug Watson, trainer of Arqaam and Rohaani
"We know Arqaam has ability as he won last time on dirt, which will hopefully have done his confidence a lot of good and he didn't lose ground at the start on that occasion, which he has done before. I thought Rohaani ran very well on the first night and hope both will run big races."

Ryan Moore, jockey of Bon Spiel
"I have yet to sit on him but he arrives after two good runs on the all-weather so he should be fit enough. His turf form in Italy looks decent and he looks a nice outside ride."

Tadhg O'Shea, jockey of Before You Go
"He is much better drawn this time and is a course and distance winner. We have put the headgear back on and expect a better effort."

Saeed Bin Suror, trainer of Age of Reason
"Ran very well on his local debut and first start for us. He will have improved for that outing and we hope he goes close."

Royston Ffrench, jockey of Love Galore
"Bottom weight is obviously a bonus and he is not badly drawn giving his style of running. He ran well enough last week and his Glorious Goodwood form would give him a real chance."

Shafya hopeful Third Set can follow up course win

Preview: Dubai, Thursday

Nad Al Sheba: Al Rashidiya (Sponsored by Dubal) (Group 3) Turf 1m1f

Mike De Kock, trainer of Hunting Tower, Silver Mist and Royal Vintage
"It was a tough choice for Kevin (Shea) as all three have some kind of chance. Kevin chose Silver Mist as it was probably a better race he won than the one Hunting Tower did last week. The step up in trip should not be a problem for either. We gelded Royal Vintage in the UK and he may have needed his comeback. We have always thought about trying him on turf here so we are having a crack and have put the blinkers on as he has been disappointing."

Saeed Bin Suroor, trainer of Kirklees and Familiar Territory
"Kirklees has done well since he arrived in Dubai and has been working well. He is a useful performer and should be able to give a bold showing. Familiar Territory is alsoin good form and hopefully both can run big races."

Mubarak Bin Shafya, trainer of Third Set and With Interest
"We are delighted with the way things are going and Third Set's course and distance win was very pleasing. This is a step up in class but he has come out of that race well. With Interest is a nice horse but was behind Third Set last time."

Ryan Moore, jockey of Oracle West
"He knows his way around here and has been in Dubai all summer so has had a nice break. The trip is his minimum but he has been pleasing Herman (Brown) in his work."

John Egan, jockey of Traffic Guard
"He is a good horse as he showed in Ireland and has run well here in the past. He is entitled to come on for the run and should go well.

Erwan Charpy, trainer of Mashaahed
"He seems in good form at home but we have only run him once which was 11 months ago so he may need the outing but I am hoping he is up to this class.

Balding concerned by Banknote's wide draw

Preview: Dubai, Thursday

Nad Al Sheba: Dubai Casthouse Handicap (Turf) 1m

Andrew Balding, trainer of Banknote
"I arrived on Wednesday morning and the horse looks in great shape and has blossomed in the warmer weather. We have done all right at Nad Al Sheba in the past but I must admit that the wide draw is something of a concern."

Alan Jarvis, trainer of Wise Dennis
"I would have preferred to be drawn closer to the rail but we know conditions suit him well and he looks in great shape. Ted (Durcan) rode him work on Saturday and was very pleased. There are many options to consider after this but a repeat bid at the Zabeel Mile would definitely be a major consideration."

Kevin Manning, jockey of Akua'Ba
"We are drawn on the inside so will be looking for a run in a big field as she is normally held up. She has been off since the end of August but looks well and has enjoyed the weather. It is a competitive race though.

Report: Nad Al Sheba, Thursday

BRITISH trainers may have drawn a blank on Day 3 of the Dubai Carnival at Nad Al Sheba, but champion jockey Ryan Moore spared the nation's blushes with a double on Dynamic Saint and Strategic News.

With his father Gary watching in the stands, Moore struck for the second time at the carnival after Presvis last week when bringing Dynamic Saint to collar long-time leader Moonquake inside thefinal furlong of the Dubai Billet 2000, a 1m2f dirt handicap.

Now the winner of five of his 17 starts, the six-year-old is trained by UAE champion Doug Watson, also completing a double after taking the opener with Fares.

"I really hoped he would win as he has been going well at home," said Watson. "He has a lot of ability but is not always the easiest."

Hardly anything got into the race after Moonquake was sent to the front in the early stages by Royston Ffrench.

Under a rail-hugging ride, Moonquake established a clear lead turning for home with most of his rivals under pressure but 7-1 chance Dynamic Saint ranged alongside about a furlong out and had too much for his gallant rival.

The winner carries the colours of local businessman Malih Al Basti, who was accompanied by training legend Henry Cecil.

The second half of the Moore double came in the concluding Dubai Casthouse Handicap when Strategic News came with a fantastic late burst to lead close home.

But it must have been a race of mixed emotions for winning trainer Herman Brown, whose other runner Perfect Season unseated Daragh O'Donohoe in the straight when they appeared to clip heels.

Fortunately, both horse and jockey emerged unscathed after a race in which the Queen's Banknote was prominent before fading into tenth in the home straight.

Strategic News was completing a South African double in the last two races after Mike De Kock claimed the Al Rashidiya with Silver Mist, who just got the better of Third Set in a thrilling finish to the Group 3 feature over 1m1f on turf.

For a moment after entering the straight it looked as if Richard Hills might have stolen the $200,000 event on front-running Mashaahed before Silver Mistchallenged three wide.

But the winner was appropriately named as the 9-4 favourite loomed out of a descending mist to lead a furlong out and score under hard driving from Kevin Shea.

De Kock said: ""That was his second run in three weeks and that may be enough for now.

"We have several others for the upcoming big racesand we could even put him away for now. He is a Group 3 winner now and we would have settled for that before the carnival."

Third Set was a half-length behind in second, with Godolphin's Kirklees flying from the rear to deny Mashaahed third place.

Punters betting outside the UAE were hit by a string of shock results when none of the first three races went to horses priced shorter than 20-1 with British bookmakers.

The Doug Watson-trained Fares, formerly trained by Clive Brittain, was the 25-1 winner of the opening Dubai Ingot 1600, a 1m dirt handicap, scoring comfortably under Daragh O'Donohoe.

Never far off the pace, they hit the front over a furlong out and were always going to hold the late challenge of veteran Grand Hombre.

"We were a bit disappointed with him last week but he is tough and does not mind turning out again quickly," said O'Donohoe.

There was also a shock in the Dubai Trophy which was won easily by Richard Hills on the Erwan Charpy-trained Ragheed.

Like Fares, Sheikh Hamdan's five-year-old had also run with little obvious promise on the previous week's card - and he was duly sent off a virtually unconsidered 33-1 shot.

Drawn one, Hills never left the aluminium and, when a gap opened a furlong out, his mount responded quickly to shoot through and the pair were never going to be caught.

"That is how you have to ride him and the gap opened when I needed it and he really picked up well," said the jockey.

Charpy and Hills were denied a quick double when Tawaassolwas caught in the last stride in the 5f Dubai Power Dash by Royston Ffrench on the Ali Rashid Al Raihe-trained Change Alley, a 20-1 chance.

Ffrench explained: "This is very much his minimum trip and his stamina has probably gained the day at the end as he really stuck his neck out when I asked him."

British-trained horses took second and third in the Dubai Potline Trophy over 1m4f on the turf - but they finished well adrift of Age Of Reason, who became Saeed Bin Suroor's fifth winner of 2009.

Always handy, the 13-2 winner tackled front-running Detonator a couple of furlongs out and scored eased down by five lengths under Ted Durcan.

Old favourite Young Mick just held Love Galore on the line to claim second, but the race was over by the time either of them attempted to deliver a challenge.

"He has done that well and quickened up nicely," said Durcan.

"They did not go very quick and that has suitedhim as we were never far away."

The well-fancied Bon Spiel folded tamely in the closing stages after holding every chance two out under Ryan Moore.
