There is a very good story about the time Tony McCoy's PA Gee Bradburne told her boss that she was planning to take part in the London Marathon.

"Are you going to win?" inquired the champion jockey of Bradburne, herself (as Gee Armytage) an accomplished rider during the 1980s. When the obvious response came back, he said: "What's the point of taking part then?"
McCoy is without equal in National Hunt racing

The story tells much about McCoy, known variously as Tony, AP or Anthony, but widely recognised as a racing colossus.

A steely, almost frightening, will-to-win has delivered 13 and a half championships (the 14th for the current season is almost in the bag), and now the remarkable total of 3,000 jumping winners in Britain and Ireland, and counting.

And all that despite the fact that danger and potential injury are constant galloping companions, and spirit-sapping dieting is part of everyday life.

Ever since McCoy's first ever victory, winning has been what it's all about for the Ulsterman. He simply cannot bear the thought of not being successful, and although the petulant days of weighing-room doors being slammed or riding helmet hurled are long gone, defeats still leave McCoy visibly furious.

But that hatred of being beaten is only part of the equation as any of the thousands who back him daily at the big occasions like Cheltenham or Sandown or at the more bread and butter racing fixtures staged at locations such as Sedgefield or Wincanton will attest.

In fact, win number 2,998, achieved at Wincanton, on Stradbrook on Thursday is a perfect example. The horse, owned by businessman JP McManus, McCoy's boss, was one of three horses involved in a thrilling finish, and despite the obvious strength of the other two riders somehow the champion jockey managed to squeeze that extra ounce out of his mount to win.

The same kind of thing happens practically every day in a manner that's sometimes little short of miraculous, even uncanny. The same applies to the 34-year-old's fortitude.

In 2008 McCoy yet again defied medical opinion, this time returning to action barely two months after breaking his back, and in time for the Cheltenham Festival. Anyone who does that has to be hard.

Perceived wisdom in some quarters is that McCoy is as deadly serious, unsmiling and granite-faced in real life as he is on the track. But such an assessment is to get the man totally wrong.

A dry, self-deprecating wit is never far away, especially when discussing his famously unsuccessful Grand National record (no better than third).

And, however peppered with racing, conversations swerve very easily away to other sports, notably latest thoughts about Arsenal or Tiger Woods. Now married to Chanelle and joined in 2007 by daughter Eve, talk inevitably turns to just how long he will ride on.

The same polite answer follows every time: "until somebody takes the title off me". He simply cannot countenance being second best.

But a glance at the formbook (he's miles clear of nearest rival Richard Johnson) indicates such a moment is probably some time off yet.

McCoy himself is too diplomatic to say much about a wider public recognition, but it's a frustration within jump racing as a whole that a person who's held such total, brilliant domination over his sport for so long- nearly 15 years, far longer than anyone else in theirs - does not receive more acknowledgement.

Perhaps this latest, extraordinary feat will go some way towards filling that particular gap.

McCoy reaches 3,000 jumps winners milestone

TONY McCOY finally reached his personal landmark of 3,000 career jumps winners with success aboard Restless D'Artaix in the 2m1f beginners' chase at Plumpton on Monday.

Just half an hour after being cruelly robbed of victory when Miss Sarenne fell at the last with the race seemingly in the bag, McCoy returned to the saddle and demonstrated the strength of mind and body that has set him apart and seen him land the jockeys' title an unprecedented 13 times.

He sat just behind the front-running The Package throughout, and then moved to dispute the lead turning into the home straight. Timmy Murphy didn't give up easily on his mount and the pair jumped the last two fences together, but McCoy was not to be denied again and drove the seven-year-old out to the line to create history.

McCoy said afterwards: It's not something I'm going to play down - I am ecstatic.

"All 3,000 winners have taken a lot of hard work.

"It's very easy to be driven when you are lucky enough to do a job you love.

"I am lucky to have been supported by a number of great people over the years."

McCoy was also quick to pay tribute to his agent after his landmark success: "It's great, I've been very lucky with my agent [Dave Roberts].

"A lot of thanks must go to Dave Roberts. He's helped me since I started and, without him, this wouldn't be possible."

Earlier in the afternoon, winner 2,999 had been achieved courtesy of Hello Moscow, which had seen the champion at his brilliant best, cajoling the horse from over a circuit out to a neck victory.

Nicky Henderson provided McCoy with three of his four rides, and after sharing the agony of Miss Sarenne's fall, was quick to praise the legendary rider.

He said: "Just as you see it today, it couldn't be wetter, it couldn't be colder and he can ride winners like that and finish like that - it's quite extraordinary. I think he is the only person who would have won on either of them.

"You'll never see numbers like that again. I cannot ever see him stopping because that's the way he is."

Coral offer 5-1 that McCoy will ride another 1,000 winners.

McCoy is `helplessly addicted to success'

The day I stop being champion jockey is the day I quit...

He has been described as ``the greatest jumps jockey to have set foot on a racetrack’’, one who is ``helplessly addicted to success’’.

JUST like a cricketer two runs shy of a century, UK champion jumps jockey Anthony Peter (``AP’’) McCoy MBE (left) made heavy weather of recording his 3000th success, but eventually achieved that milestone at Plumpton last Monday, 9 February, aboard Nicky Henderson-trained Restless D'Artaix. Eight days later, his winning tally stands at 3005 - nearly twice the previous record.

Phumelela’s racing executive Patrick Davis was CEO of Plumpton for several years and, as one of McCoy’s greatest fans, is ecstatic that ``AP’s landmark win’’ came at ``his’’ course.

Said Davis: ``He’s one of my heroes. He rode 126 winners at Plumpton while I was there. It was always a great privilege to get the `David Beckham’ of racing to our small track.

``He’s often criticised as being unapproachable, but that’s because he’s so competitive. AP is always so focussed. He’s the bravest sportsman I’ve ever witnessed. He’s an amazing, amazing man.’’

The 1.8m-tall rider, who weighs around 65kg and regularly fasts for days to make the required weight for races, is known for pushing himself and his mounts to the limit. The pale, gaunt man is generally viewed as an ``obsessive harvester of winners’’. However, as single-minded and ruthless as he is on the track, he is the opposite off it, conducting himself with humility, decency and integrity - and as ``a non-smoking teetotal ascetic’’, he can be the life and soul of any party.

According to a Times Online article, McCoy does not regard himself as a natural talent in the way of Ruby Walsh or John Francome. ``There are people who have more talent,’’ he says. ``But what is a more natural sportsman than someone who wins all the time. The biggest talent is working hard and having mental strength.’’

None can doubt his work ethic or resilience and last year he told The Independent: ``You live in constant fear of failure. When you've got to the top of your profession, there's no other way but down.’’

Born on 4 May 1974 in Northern Ireland, McCoy’s first win came aboard long-shot Legal Steps for Jim Bolger at Thurles on 26 March 1992. Two years later, he moved across the Irish Sea and claimed his first victory in England at Exeter on 7 September 1994. He hasn’t looked back.

A remarkable man, he has enjoyed many landmark moments:

- 2914 jumps winners in Britain; the others in Ireland

- 1921 days (just over five years, the fastest in history) to reach the 1000-winner milestone in Britain

- 2001-02 his best season - he rode 289 winners and broke Sir Gordon Richards’ 54-year-old record

- 20 winners at the Cheltenham Festival (a record-equalling five in 1998)

- 13 championships, holding the record, and champion jumps jockey every year since 1995-96

- nine winners on the flat (six in Ireland, three in Britain)

- sixth on the all-time British jockeys’ list behind Richards, Pat Eddery and Lester Piggott, who all rode into their 50s, as well as Willie Carson and Doug Smith

More than a third of his winners came courtesy of Martin Pipe, for whom he rode for almost a decade. He is currently employed by high-profile owner JP McManus and affiliated to ex-jumps jockey Jonjo O’Neil, who won the jumps jockey title twice and retired with 885 winners.

His gravest disappointment has been sometimes not getting top rides at the major fixtures. He told Times Online: ``One thing I admire about Lester Piggott is the way he always got on the best horse. He wasn’t a popular person for that, but I think I could cope with that. I don’t want to sound as if I have a divine right to be riding everything, but you’d like to be asked.’’

McCoy, who has two autobiographies on the market - ``Real McCoy: My Life So Far’’ and ``McCoy’’ released in 1999 and 2003 respectively - has had more than his fair share of injuries, breaking nearly every bone in his body at one time or another. Last year he had to learn to walk again after breaking his back in a fall. Seven weeks later he rode at the Cheltenham Festival.

But he is not thinking of retiring soon - he has hinted at another decade in the saddle. Given that it takes him roughly five years to ride 1000 winners, he could get to his 4000th victory in 2014 and the 5000th in 2019. That’s not to say he won’t quit sooner. He told Times Online: ``My biggest fear is going on longer than I should have done.’’

So he’s in the process of securing his future. He and his wife Chanelle are building a training yard near Lambourn where they live with their daughter Eve. But before that he has two remaining ambitions: to ride 300 winners in a season and win the Grand National.
