tote bet cancellations
16 years 4 months ago
Twice in recent teletrack broadcasts Bloomberg refers to neil andrews’ habit of cancelling tote bets (to increase the dividend).
I first reported him about 10 years ago doing this in Randburg Tats, with his big mates (among them all the “celebrity” teletrack presenters) cheering him on.
I was then assured that cancellation of bets were not allowed.
However over the years I have often seen pools behaving erratically.
A letter to saftote with screenshots of how a pool suddenly shrunk seconds before the off received no reply. (one reason why I will not support the tote)
I also have a couple of K lying around that I would like to use to manipulate the dividends – any “celebrities” out there that can help me doing this?

These blokes that are continually alluding that bets on the tote are cancelled – if you firmly believe this, you must be brainless if you then still punt horses on the tote.

Did you read the complete, unedited post, ruffie?

I may be a gambling addict, but I am not brainless.

Simple answer - no bet over R1,000 can be cancelled.
In the advent of choosing the 'wrong number' - can only be cancelled if within 2 mins of the 'off time'. Any such cancellations - ID particulars taken, so that if the same person does repeatedly said option of cancellation is withdrawn.
Guys we've all done it from time to time - put the wrong number, say-la-vie.
If your betting large amounts you can surely live with such errors, and only those that are 'grafting' will really be 'upset' = quickly lesssen it's occurance, and bring it under control - no?

Jamster I would like to see you tell a punter that has made a genuine mistake that he can't cancel his ticket. What you have suggested is ludicrous.

Nagboy what part of:
"In the advent of choosing the 'wrong number' - can only be cancelled if within 2 mins of the 'off time'. Any such cancellations - ID particulars taken, so that if the same person does repeatedly said option of cancellation is withdrawn. "
Don't you get mate?
Also:
"If your betting large amounts you can surely live with such errors, and only those that are 'grafting' will really be 'upset'"
Pretty straight forward and fair inmho - no?
Respectfully, Jim.

i don't understand.
are you saying that someone goes onto the tote with a few R'000 which he places on his non-fancied runner (say he doesn't like the second fav) in order to increase the dividend on his fancy (maybe the 3rd fav). then when his runner wins (or even just after the off) he takes his two betting slips and collects on the one and says he made the other bet in error and wants a refund?
if this is what is happening it is ridiculous. can you imagine going to a casino and asking to take back your chips placed on lucky no.7 after the ball is thrown? they don't care whether it is a mistake or not, they will not allow it the first time. if you do it twice you will be picking yourself off the pavement.

No GB, what's being said is that some are pilling money on the 'wrong' selection - and then just before the off, 'cancelling' said ticket, and betting the 'right' Horse.

cheers Jim, but what's the point - if the first bet is cancelled and the second placed before the off the the dividend declared will reflect the true pool.
or are you saying the first bet for example might create a false favourite which the mug punter sees and piles into...

Yeah I believe that must be part of it.
However, living in the UK I've often wondered how the SA SP is brought about here?
And seeing as it's quite easy to get a bet on - if it's alined in any way to the tote, then I can see it could be a very profitable thing indeed!

Would guess? if you put 10,000 on the tote horse goes 1.5 and if you cancell it goes to 2.5 to help inflate the price, no ideas of numbers as not into the tote.
Few options I guess, you could have asked your bookie for the tote dividend for a win? Or you might just want 1,000 on and with cancelling the 10,000 gives you a better payout and many normal/small punters may avoid taking the 1.5.?
