Guineas Day supplementary entries

ROYAL Union was the only runner to be added to the R1-million Gauteng Guineas nominations when supplementary entries closed on Monday.

The Al Mufti gelding is a one-time winner and is trained in KwaZulu-Natal by Gavin van Zyl. His only victory came over 1000m and he has yet to prove he will stay the 1600m of this Grade 2 race, to be run on Saturday 28 February.

The R1-million race is one of four graded races to take place on Guineas Day. The others are the Grade 1 Laurie Jaffee Empress Club Stakes, the Gauteng Fillies Guineas (G2) and the Hawaii Stakes (G2). All the races are scheduled to be run on the Turffontein standside track.

The Gauteng Guineas also forms the first leg of the Triple Crown, the others being the R2-million SA Classic over 1800m on Saturday 28 March and the R1.5-million SA Derby over 2450m on Saturday 25 April. There is a bonus of R2 million up for grabs for any horse who can capture all three races.

Outcome, who won the weather-delayed Flamboyant Stakes at Greyville, has been supplemented into the Empress Club Stakes along with St John Gray’s Speech Time. Outcome is trained by Mike Miller and is a winner of 10 races from 26 starts.

Speech Time, who has won five of her 15 starts, is also a supplementary entry into the Hawaii stakes over 1400m. It might prove to be the better option as the Announce filly will have to meet the likes of Dancer’s Daughter and Emblem Of Liberty at level weights in the Empress Club Stakes but has been allotted just 51.5kg in the Hawaii Stakes.

Also added to the Hawaii Stakes entries are Dominic Zaki’s Surabi, El Padrino from the Dave Goss yard, and Miller’s The Big Ask. No runners have been supplemented into Gauteng Fillies Guineas.

Declarations take place at 11am on Thursday 19 February.

Great entertainment at 2-day festival

THE two-day racing festival at Turffontein next weekend, incorporating Guineas Day and Johannesburg’s first Friday meeting, is packed with attractions.

In addition to five exciting feature races, racegoers will be treated to live entertainment and a R100 000 lucky draw giveway (see the accompanying story on the website for details of this amazing Phumelela-sponsored bonanza).

The programme on Saturday is topped by the R1-million Grade 1 Empress Club Laurie Jaffee Stakes over 1600m. This weight-for-age contest for fillies and mares sees the Highveld debut of the brilliant Western Cape filly Dancer’s Daughter – recently a close second in the J&B Met and a winner in the momentous 2008 Durban July dead-heat.

Next on the power-packed bill is the Gauteng Guineas, also with a R1-million prize and one of the great three-year-old classics of the South African turf. The 1600m Grade 2 race is the first leg of the newly reconstituted Triple Crown, which lends an extra dimension to the Highveld season.

The fillies’ equivalent to the Triple Crown is the Triple Tiara, the first leg of which is the R500 000 Gauteng Fillies Guineas – another 1600m Grade 2 event on Saturday’s card.

The feast of top-class racing is rounded out by the R300 000 Grade 2 Hawaii Stakes over 1400m, and the R135 000 Listed Aquanaut Handicap over 2450m.

The Friday meeting ahead of Guineas Day is the third in this summer’s series of experimental Highveld twilight meetings, and the first time in living memory that Johannesburg will see Friday racing.

The Turffontein piazza will come to life on both race days, with a live band performing.

Racegoers are encouraged to bring their families along for an afternoon of great fun – with music, racing, food and drink in a beautiful leafy setting.

Guineas Day R100 000 giveaway

AN AMAZING R100 000 in betting money will be given away to racegoers at Turffontein on Guineas Day, February 28. And R20 000 of it will be exclusively for Racing Association members.

Racing operator Phumelela is sponsoring the great lucky draw giveaway to boost the crowd at the big meeting – which is highlighted by five feature races and the much-anticipated Highveld debut of champion mare Dancer’s Daughter.

Each member of the public entering Turffontein on the day will be handed an entry form. Filled in forms should be dropped in specially marked bins for collection and entry in the draw.

The public draw will be held immediately after the running of the Gauteng Guineas, and prizes are in betting vouchers valid for 30 days.

First prize is R30 000. Second prize is R15 000, third R10 000 and fourth R5 000.

There are a further 10 prizes of R2 000 each.

In addition, RA members are in line to win in a separate R20 000 draw. All members dining and racing in the Elevation Room on the day – and wearing their membership badges – are eligible.

Final fields for Guineas Day

PHUMELELA MEDIA RELEASE:

GYPSY’s Warning will be fully tested when she takes on Dancer’s Daughter in the Grade 1 Laurie Jaffee Empress Club Stakes on Guineas Day at Turffontein. The pair will clash over 1600m on Saturday 28 February.
The R1 million race is one of four graded races to take place on Guineas Day. The others are the Gauteng Guineas, the Gauteng Fillies Guineas and the Hawaii Stakes, all Grade 2 events.
The R1 million Gauteng Guineas also forms the first leg of the Triple Crown, the others being the R2 million SA Classic over 1800m on Saturday 28 March and the R1.5 million SA Derby over 2450m on Saturday 25 April. There is also a bonus of R2 million up for grabs for any horse who can capture all three races. All the races are scheduled to be run on the Turffontein standside track.
It could be another Mark Khan v Piere Strydom occasion in the Empress Club Stakes as the current champion jockey will ride Justin Snaith’s grey mare who has been in the care of Geoff Woodruff for the past few weeks.
Vodacom Durban July dead heater Dancer’s Daughter is weighted to win the race quite comfortably but Gypsy’s Warning has done well since joining Ormond Ferrais’s Turffontein yard and is one of the best of three-year-old fillies in the country.
Oracy has accepted for the Gauteng Guineas and is beautifully drawn at No 2. However, stable jockey Anton Marcus is slated to ride stable companion Always with no jockey named for the Dingaans winner at this stage.
Missing from the field is Mike de Kock’s Meet A Malamala as the colt has been injured and had to be withdrawn. That leaves Bouquet-Garni as the only stable representative.
Captain’s Table ran second to Oracy in the Dingaans and should be competitive from a reasonably decent No 9 draw this time. Once again Piere Strydom gets the ride on Dominic Zaki’s charge.
The Gauteng Fillies Guineas has attracted a top-class field and looks the most competitive of the four features. De Kock has the talented Loupe, to be ridden by Anthony Delpech, and the consistent Zirconeum, Woodruff sends out Sharp Mistress and Charles Laird runs Thin Red Line.
Team Valor have two highly regarded runners in On Her Toes, trained by Mike Azzie, and newly acquire Sweet Theresa who is under the care of Ferraris.
Our Giant is weighted to win the Hawaii Stakes over 1400m but there are a number of runners who will be looking to lower his colours, including Succesful Bidder, Forest Path and Gliding High.
