Typhoon Tracy stays unbeaten for Boss

Report: Australia, Saturday

Rosehill: Coolmore Classic (Group 1) 7½f, 3yo+, f/m

TYPHOON TRACY maintained her unbeaten record with a superb win under Glen Boss in the 37th running of the Coolmore Classic at Rosehill in Sydney.

Trained by Peter Moody at Caulfield in Melbourne, Typhoon Tracy was having just her fourth start in the Coolmore, and has yet to have her colours lowered.

The three-year-old daughter of Red Ransom had to overcome a wide draw in barrier 16in the $A600,000 (£286,000) Group 1 event - the nation's richest for fillies and mares.

However, ‘Group 1 Glen' was able to get his mount across onto the rails soon after the start, and Typhoon Tracy slowed the pace, with the New Zealand mare Culminate on her outer.

As they straightened for the run home, Typhoon Tracy got on the wrong leg in her first run on a right-handed track, and Culminate, carrying 10lb more, hit the front.

But Boss didn't panic, balanced his mount again and came back to win by a half-length from a game runner-up, with Gallant Tess a length and a quarter back in third.

"She got lost on the turn, but man, she's a good filly," said Moody.

"She is so exciting - we have not seen the best of her yet and everything is so effortless for her."

Boss was similarly full of praise. "To ride a filly like this is a real pleasure," he said.

"I knew she was a Group 1 horse, and wait till she gets to a mile. She has the potential to be a superstar."

THESEO justified his status as one of the nation's top weight-for-age horses when capping a red-letter day for his trainer Gai Waterhouse with a hard-fought win in the Ranvet Stakes.

Waterhouse lined up juvenile stars More Joyous and Real Saga to win their respective lead-ups to the rich Golden Slipper, and then saddled up her stable star in the $A400,000 (£191,000) feature.

Sent off a shade of odds-on, Theseo (Nash Rawiller) made amends for his last-start nose defeat by Niconero in the Australian Cup with a game win, his third this season at the top level.

The five-year-old son of Danewin went straight to the front, increased the tempo with just over four furlongs to run and made his rivals chase.

Chase they did, but Theseo had their measure all the way down the Rosehill straight, keeping at bay Melbourne Cup winner Viewed by a length and three quarters, with Moatize a close-up third.

"He's an outstanding individual - he has a heart as big as a lion," said Waterhouse.

"I just admire him so much - I knew from day one he would be a top-class horse," she said.

Adelaide Group 1 double for Price and Newitt

Report: Australia, Saturday

Morphettville:Schweppes Australasian Oaks (Group 1) 1m2f, 3yo fillies

TRAINER Mick Price, based at Caulfield in Melbourne, had an awayday to remember at Adelaide on Saturday when he teamed up with Craig Newitt for two Group 1 successes at Morphettville courtesy of Gallica and Bel Mer.

Even-money favourite Gallica was in a class of her own in the $A300,000 (£143,000) Schweppes Oaks, enjoying a beautiful trail before being asked for her effort fully two furlongs from home.

Even though left in front a long way out, she was far too good, holding off Estee by two-and-a-half lengths. Miss Lily Rose took third a length away.

Bought byher trainer at the 2007 Magic Millions yearling sale for $A250,000 (£119,000) Gallica was winning her second Group 1 event, having taken out the Thousand Guineas on her home track in the spring.

She has now won her owners, Richard and June Harding, just short of $A1m and must be worth a fortune, being a daughter of Redoute's Choice out of a Kingmambo half-sister to international stakes winners Corviglia, Masterful and River Rhythm.

Price said Gallica would now be off to Sydney for two races, including the AJC Oaks at Randwick.

"I'm very lucky to have one as good as her to train," he said.

"It wasn't ideal getting left in front so far out, but she handled the ten furlongs with ease. She hit the line really well - that was the best part."

Morphettville: Robert Sangster Stakes (Group 1) 6f, 3yo+, f/m

BEL MER, a four-year-old daughter of Bel Esprit, made it a magical double for Price and Newitt with a resounding return to her best form.

Placed at Group 1 level behind Weekend Hussler, Bel Mer had struggled to regain her best form since.

But the 7-1 shot led under her own steam, then shot well clear after straightening and easily held her rivals at bay to win by a length from Hidden Energy, with Impressive Eagle a long neck back third.

Price said: "It's a long straight for a horselike her - we think she's really only got a furlong and a half sprint but she hung on gamely and is now a Group 1 winner, which is fantastic for her owners, Vinery Stud.
