Our Giant for Horse Chestnut on Sat 4th?

OUR Giant and Anton Marcus will be looking to win his second successive HF Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes if he accepts for the Grade 1 race over 1600m at Turffontein on Saturday 4 April.

The R1-million event is one of five graded races on the day to be run on the standside track. The other events are the Senor Santa Handicap over 1160m, the Gerald Rosenberg Stakes for fillies and mares over 2000m, the Colorado King Stakes over 2000m (all Grade 2 races) and the Sycamore Sprint (G3) for fillies and mares over 1160m.

As expected Dancer’s Daughter is not among the acceptors but there are plenty of runners who will make Our Giant, who last year won a tense duel with the ill-fated Emperor Napoleon, work for victory.

Mike de Kock has three runners, including SA Classic winner Forest Path, import Drayton and filly Gilded Minaret. According to assistant trainer John Buckler Forest Path took Saturday’s race exceptionally well and there are no plans to pull him out of the Horse Chestnut Stakes. No jockey has been declared but it appears Raymond Danielson, who combined so well with the headstrong son of Fort Wood in the Classic, will be asked to ride him again.

Drayton has a habit of losing volumes of ground at the start but if he gets out on terms, he has to be a threat to Our Giant. The Irish import has only run twice since arriving in the country for a win and a 2.90-length fourth to Thandolwami over 1400m at Greyville, despite losing at least eight lengths as the gates opened.

Laird has some useful back up for Our Giant in the form of Charity Mile November Handicap winner Likeithot, to be ridden by Piere Strydom, and Steinhoff Summer Cup runner-up Smart Banker, with Andrew Fortune up.

KZN trainer Mike Miller will have a good feeling about The Big Ask, who came from last to run a one-length second to Our Giant in the Hawaii Stakes over 1400m. There is, however, a 4kg weight turnaround in favour of the Laird runner and that could make Robbie Hill’s task pretty tough.

To me it looks like a case of Our Giant or anything. They are a very equally matched lot, behind Our Giant.

Agreed Our Giant looks a good thing. Drayton the only danger if he can jump. The Gerald Rosenberg looks interesting. If Milk and Honey repeats her cracking last run behind Dancer's Daughter should be hard to beat, form franked with Gypsey's Warning.

It is nice to see Forest Path a top 3yo take on top older horses, it will be good to start seeing how competitive the 3yo's are for the upcoming KZN winter season.

True, shrek, and it will hopefully help to solve the riddle of 3yo merit ratings versus older horses MRs.
