Interbet KZN weekend preview

When a race pops up where the field has a 44% winning strike rate between them from 55 starts, then you know the feature season has arrived. On Sunday at Scottsville it’s the grade-3 Sunday Tribune Byerley Turk stakes over 1400m for 3yr old males, and this is a seriously strong field. Target Acquired and Lord London hang their unbeaten reputations on the line and take on feature race winners Big City Life and Gold Game but the list doesn’t end there - welcome to KZN’s Winter gathering of stars right here, right now!

Scottsville Sunday Race 8 - Byerley Turk Stakes (grade 3)

No.2 TARGET ACQUIRED (2/1)
Lots of talk about this Cape raider, unbeaten in 4 starts and time to see what he’s made of.

No.5 LORD LONDON (5/2)
Also unbeaten and rated by jockey A.Delpech as the best 3yr old in the country. Trainer Al Gordon reports that he’s fit and well and has improved many lengths since his last win when going in underdone.

Lord London

No.1 BIG CITY LIFE (3/1)
According to trainer G. Kotzen he was about to be sold before the deal crashed so a bit short on work at the moment and hasn’t been prepped fort this race. I watched him gallop on Thursday morning and he’s a pace machine!

Big City Life

No.3 SHARKS BAY (5/1)
Promising local form against weaker, there’s more to do here and lumped with the other less fancied contenders, this is a race of hope against benchmark 3yr olds where a good showing equates to bigger things to come.

No.6 GOLD GAME (16/1)
Promising first two wins/runs but has since failed to feature. Trainer D. Cunha reports that he’s lost a bit of his earlier speed and they’re trying him here with blinkers and beyond a sprint for the first time. This is somewhat of an experiment to find the way forward and he’s not 100% fit at this stage

Gold Game

Of the rest, they’re all looking to prove themselves and provide their owners with the thrill of an open cheque book for the future.

The Umzimkhulu stakes is the feature equivalent of the Byerley Turk but for the girls and although incomparable in terms of line-up quality, this race looks as difficult to assess as its male counterpart. Good luck with that!

Scanning through the week-end’s racing for rent money and all I could find was eviction notices; it’s competitive and evenly matched racing all round and that’s before adding the Cape raiders into the mix! Keep an eye on Summerveld trainer Alistair Gordon who looks to have a strong chance of bagging a few winners from his 8 runners over the weekend. 5 go out on Friday night and of particular interest is Red Flyer in the 6th race who is smack on the bottom of the boards. His last run is best ignored where he did not act on the Scottsville bog, but prior to that he was coming to hand and on ability he’s a runner in this sort of field. Sahara is ridiculously short at 7/10 and although in with a chance she’s up against tough male opposition and value prices abound.

Greyville Race 6

No.8 SAHARA (1/1 claimed) 7/10
It’s a lay at this price!

No.4 LORD OF THE SEA 7/2
Course and distance specialist

No.2 CAPTAIN IN COMMAND 5/1
Quality CPT raider should be suited to the track

No.3 LUCKY BOY 6/1
Good last win in the wet first time out in KZN, hard to assess

No.5 DYNAMITE MIKE 10/1
Regular bookies knob-lay but he won’t get an easier chance than tonight. Much too far back last time out, raced wide into the straight and still ran on strongly. Excellent previous effort
behind Thandolwami and a big runner in this field. Value at 10/1, should be 5/1

Dynamite Mike

No.7 PRIZE FLOWER 10/1
Stable recovering late from the virus at Summerveld and horses have been out of work. Others preferred

No.1 DIAMOND QUEST 12/1
First run back in SA and probably looking for further

No.6 RED FLYER 12/1
Did not act last time out and looked in need of some tightening up. A much improved and competitive effort is expected this time. Value

Greyville race 7

Cape raider Genius my King tops the boards in the 8th race but looks beatable here taking on a few good ones from KZN.

No.2 GENIUS MY KING 3/1
Good JHB form

No.1 WEST COAST GOLD 4/1
Set a blistering pace last time out and did very well to stay within 2 1/2 lengths of Pirate's Gold, the eventual winner and course record breaker in the same race. Classy on his day and a big runner if repeating last effort.

No.5 UNCLE JACK 9/2
Ultra consistent but outgunned here

No.4 PRESIDENTIAL JET 5/1
Looked exceptionally well last time out but blew his chances fighting with the rider instead of sticking to racing purpose. Chance

No.6 FORLISA 5/1
The only 3 year old in the race and under sufferance

No.8 ERUDITE 7/1 (claimed) 5/1
Top class specimen but runs the risk of bleeding so very much a hit or miss punting affair. Impressive win last time out and a winning chance here. Value with a decent stretch on Interbet, look for >8/1.

Erudite

No.3 PREACH CONNECTION 10/1
Always thereabouts but battling to recapture earlier promise

No.9 HERMES 16/1
Lightly raced 5yr old with little to recommend

No.10 INTERLINK 16/1
Outgunned

No.7 THREE DEGREES 20/1
Looks to be a safe exclusion here

Moving back to Sunday at Scottsville and in the 4th race Al Gordon’s No.1 Queen Moet is the justifiable favourite and looks to have a big chance of winning. She’s promising and doesn’t take on much of note here so 7/2 appears good value

Queen Moet

Scottsville race 5

Top weight No.1 Bold Wonder (3/1) has recently changed stables from M.Roberts to D.Howells and it will be interesting to see how she fares now. Has promised much with a number of exciting performances but ultimately failed to launch so she should be watched here. No.2 Sunningdale (4/1) epitomizes the stayer physique and this young filly is going places. Eye catching last win and if she handles the Scottsville track then she should be in the first two.

One more to mention is No.5 Miss Lovita (5/1) in the 6th race, according to assistant Frank Robinson she’s doing well and with a light weight on her back she’ll be looking for the lead early and to bowl on all the way home. Price drift expected...

Who was it that said Germans don’t have a sense of humour? Here Kabamba gets his teeth filed at the Herman Brown yard and the German Vet (pictured) didn’t quite get to grips with my misinterpretation of (what appeared to be) a gynaecologist’s toolset.

Thanks Leon, have to disagree with your assessment of Sahara though, I think she is a certainty at the weights

Lovely Post. Agree with you strongly with Queen Moet. Ignore her second last run as nothing went right for her on the day. Flew up last time behind Touch Of Spring, who franked the form on Wednesday by beating a competitive field. At the weights from her last run she seems to be held by a few, but she looks like she has still scope for further improvement whereas the others have had their fair share of runs.
