Summer Samba (behind) gets spellbound by Magic Treasure
(pic Gold Circle)
Summer Samba looked hard to oppose in the 5th race at Scottsville on Wednesday but was unable to reel in long time ambler Magic Treasure (25/1) and had to settle for 2nd best on the day. Summer Samba jumped on terms and was well placed early on, but once rider Brandon Lerena settled her she switched off and fell in behind. This race (86.24secs) was more than 3 seconds slower than the Umzimkhulu Stakes (82.94) run over the same course and distance only 2 weeks back.. and Summer Samba finished close up in both of them. Track conditions were similarly messy for both races and once again it's the single biggest factor affecting the formbook in KZN racing to blame - P.A.C.E.!
The purpose of getting a horse racing fit is so he/she can get around the track at high speed and still have the stamina to keep rolling all the way home. Bringing a horse to peak empowers him to reach full racing potential and crack career best times. A slow run race gives the unfit and inadequately prepared horse a chance because he really only needs to be fit enough to sprint for half a km. In a true run race he will be galloped off his feet before the home stretch and won't be heard of in the commentary when the action climaxes. Walking around the race track and then sprinting for home evens out the playing field and tosses both handicapping and race readiness right out the picture.
Take Summer Samba's time in the Umzimkhulu (83.39secs) and compare it to her time on Wednesday (86.43) and clearly there's a glaring discrepancy - 3 full seconds or the equivalent 15 lengths difference! Pace and race tactics blow the formbook away time & time again, so bear that in mind next time you're mulling over just how much difference 2kgs is going to make.. there's more important things to worry about.
Summer Samba needs to race over 1000m to 1200m, get stuck in early and not be allowed to switch off. Blinkers on to keep her mind off what the others are doing and she'll be in front when it's time to unwind over the last 400m. She's a short striding power-hindquarters type filly, she's fit, and she can handle a sprint from start to finish.. go girl!

Silver Fantasy (pic Gold Circle) scoops the 2009 - Scarlet Lady
Handicap over 1800m at Scottsville (Wed 6th May)
Silver Fantasy wins! - a great pick-me-up for trainer Pat Riley who is seriously ill in hospital, all the best Pat get well soon. Silver Fantasy had beaten the short priced favourite Milk and Honey last time they met and on recent form she was once again in with a clear chance of winning. She looked exceptional on the canter past and whilst bookies had a generous 16/1 on offer, the tote produced a whopping R36 win payout! - value not to be missed! I managed to get some of that and recover the losses incurred earlier with Summer Samba and some change to spare.. what a game!!!
