Presvis team confident despite SIA Cup draw
CONNECTIONS of Presvis are confident he can overcome a wide draw by securing a second successive Group 1 success in the Singapore International Airlines Cup on Sunday.
Luca Cumani's five-year-old gelding produced a stunning last-to-first finish to claim a maiden top-level victory in the Audemars Piguet QEII Cup just over two weeks ago at Sha Tin.
The Dubai Duty Free runner-up has now made the short trip to Singapore looking to give Cumani a quickfire double.
Cumani's assistant, Charlie Henson, said: "Every race going back to January have been four or five weeks apart, and it was in the back of our minds that this was only a three-week gap - but he came out of the last race well.
"He did his final piece of work in Sha Tin, and has travelled over well, and he seems to have settled into Singapore.
"He will continue to go through his routine in the paddock, which is familiarisation for us and him up to the race."
Henson added: "The draw limits your options. It's simple, he doesn't want to be up there with the leaders.
"The track favours front-runners, and is a concern, especially when we are drawn 12 of 12.
"But at Sha Tin it was a yielding track and everyone said nothing would come from behind and he did it so we have got to be hopeful.
"If you look at where he has been drawn in his last races, he was drawn eight of 10 in Hong Kong, 16 of 16 in the Dubai Duty Free and we were also drawn wide in one of the handicaps at the start of the year.
"Although it will still be difficult to get up there especially when there is not much of a straight before the first turn."
Presvis will have to mount his challenge against defending champion Jay Peg, in his last race before being retired to stud, Dubai World Cup runner-up Gloria De Campeao and Godolphin's Balius.
Cumani will touch down from his Newmarket base on Saturday, while Ryan Moore will arrive only hours before the race on Sunday after riding Perfect Stride in the Lockinge.
"Ryan is a true professional and he will be prepared the best he can," added Henson.
"Ryan gets on very well and there is a huge amount of confidence between the two of them."

Janiak happy with Target in build up to Sprint bid
Singapore: Trainer Joe Janiak gave an upbeat bulletin on Wednesday concerning Takeover Target, who had reportedly been off his feed, ahead of his bid for back-to-back successes in the KrisFlyer Sprint - the lucrative supporting event on Sunday’s ATR-televised Singapore International Airlines Cupcard.
The Australian star, stopping off en route to Royal Ascot, has been supplanted as favourite in ante-post betting by local sprinter Rocket Man, unbeaten in seven starts at Kranji.
The race is being billed as a match in Singapore – despite the presence of former world champion Sacred Kingdom and Hong Kong compatriot Inspiration, plus Prime Defender, Diabolical and Madame Trop Vite from Britain and Mythical Flight from South Africa.
Janiak had been worried about Takeover Target but was a lot more content on Wednesday according to the Singapore Turf Club.
“He’s much happier and didn’t leave any of his feed yesterday,” said Janiak. “We left some music playing for him and that has obviously done the trick.”
Janiak said Takeover Target had always had a stable companion and was used to spending time in a yard during the day.
“He’s perfect when I’m working with him outside, but when it’s time to go in his box he just digs his toes in a bit,” said Janiak.
“He’s had a companion wherever he travels. When we went to Adelaide before coming up here I picked up a horse from David Payne in Sydney, which ran in the Derby.
“The pair of them hit it off straight away and when the other horse was sent for a spell straight after his race my bloke started to fret.
“But he’s OK now and hopefully he’ll run well on Sunday.”
Rocket Man was the subject of a dramatic price cut by bookmakers Blue Square, who made him a 7-1 chance in their initial list only to cut him to 5-4 after what they claimed was “substantial support”.
While the levels of money required to make such a price cut in a one-firm market are open to question, there is no doubting the local confidence behind the three-year-old.
According to a Singapore Turf Club press release, British sprinters Prime Defender and Madame Trop Vite left the barn at the same time at 5.05am, and marched up to the Polytrack, where Prime Defender, with exercise rider Ian Willder in the saddle, pulled away to a stronger canter than his compatriot.
Madame Trop Vite, with track rider James Maher up, on the other hand, just lobbed along at a light canter and quickly pulled up after the winning post.
Willder reported Prime Defender felt “fresh”, but that was to be expected as the Barry Hills-trained entire was at his first outing on the training tracks.
“I’m very pleased with him this morning,” said the ex-jump jockey. “He was little keen but he’s never felt better. He’s done everything we asked of him.”
The Kevin Ryan-trained Madame Trop Vite did nothing taxing and Maher hopes to give him a faster workout by Friday.

Herman Brown’s Jay Peg, the defending champion who has shown signs all week of being back to his best for his final start before a career at stud beckons, had a canter on the straight Polytrack (Track 6) with his big-race jockey Anton Marcus aboard.
“I think he’s in the best shape he’s been since last year, and I’m looking for a big run on Sunday,” said Brown.
Likely favourite, but poorly drawn in barrier 12, Presvis, who took out the Hong Kong’s Audemars Piguet QE II Cup in devastating style at his last start, put in a routine canter before once again visiting the paddock.

Tote offers special pools for Singapore on Sunday
Singapore: Punters not wishing to take odds offered by the major bookmakers on Sunday afternoon's two Singapore Group 1 races will be able to bet into a special Tote pool.
The stakes from anyone placing a Totepool win, place, exacta or swinger bet on either the Singapore Airlines International Cup or Krisflyer International Sprint will be entered into the equivalent South African pools with a single dividend then returned.
The majority of the major bookmakers are offering their own prices on the two contests, both of which are being shown live on At The Races.
Punters will be able to take advertised odds in the build-up to the races, but if no such request is made, winnings will be paid out according to the individual bookmaker's final show.
Most firms are not offering the local Kranji return due to an inability to bet into the local pools.

Hope Jay Peg is o.k. ?
Wrong track for Presvis, but one to follow
Bottom line a big result for the bookies.

Gloria De Campeao defeats Presvis in thriller
Report: Singapore, Sunday
Kranji: Singapore Airlines International Cup (Group 1) 1m2f 3yo+
GLORIA DE CAMPEAO landed the £1.35 million Singapore Airlines International Cup for France with the Luca Cumani-trained Presvis just touched off for second, having been forced to come widest from the outside draw.
The runner-up, sent off favourite, was bidding for back-to-back Group 1 wins following his recent Audemars Piquet QE II Cup success.
Having been dropped in by jockey Ryan Moore, the five-year-old was forced to come around the rest at final bend and despite finishing best, lost out by the narrowest of margins.
The winner, trained by Pascal Bary in Chantilly, was having his first run since finishing second to Well Armed in the Dubai World Cup.
He said: "He ran a good race, and we were aggressive at the start, which was a good way to do things.
"The other one (Presvis) came back very well, but it was too late. He's a very good horse on dirt but he's run well on the grass in Brazil, so that was not a problem.
"I was confident he'd run well, but not that he'd win. We'll go back to France and we'll see what happens later.
"Today he has done the job - that was the way to ride him."
Last year's winner Jay Peg set a keen early pace before fading sharply and being pulled up jockey Anton Marcus while the Mike de Kock-trained Bankable, a former stable mate to the runner-up was back in third.

Rocket Man denied by Sacred Kingdom
Report: Singapore, Sunday
Kranji: KrisFlyer International Sprint 6f 3yo+
SACRED KINGDOM denied the previously unbeaten Rocket Man to land the KrisFlyer Sprint by neck with last year's winner Takeover Target disappointing behind.
Landing his first victory away from his home territory of Hong Kong, the Ricky Yiu-trained six-year-old stayed on well to deny seven-time winner Rocket Man, who was sent off favourite, in the dying strides with the Godolphin-owned Diabolical in third under Frankie Dettori.
Takeover Target never troubled the winner, travelling just off the pace and coming wide around the final bend but failing to pick up. The time of 1m07.08s was a full second quicker than last year.
Winning jockey Brett Prebble said: "He didn't relax last time he ran, but he did this time.
"He's a world champion sprinter and he's got back up on that pedestal. When he got to the front, he just waited.
"He's back to his best and we'll have a lot of funwith him. It's a pretty special win."
Dettori, who finished three and half lengths behind the winner, said: "It was a super run, he travelled with the pace and quickened well. Third was a good spot for us, we're very pleased."
British raiders Madame Trop Vite and Prime Defender never threatened, with the Kevin Ryan-trained filly finishing well back while Cammidge Trophy winner Prime Defender beat nothing home, having been drawn on the outside in stall 14
