Singapore: Ante-post betting on the Singapore races on Sunday has been turned upside down with Singapore superstar Rocket Man promoted to 5-4 favourite to beat an international field in the KrisFlyer Sprint.
Bookmakers Blue Square had initially priced up Rocket Man at 7-1 but were forced to slash his price after sustained support for the horse from Singapore.
Blue Square spokesman Alan Algar said: "We've seen substantial support from Singapore from someone connected to the horse who took every price from 7-1 down to 5-4. We've also heard that Takeover Target has not eaten up since travelling over and that's why he's weak in the market."
The Australian great is now 7-4 second choice to repeat last year's victory in the KrisFlyer Sprint, where Prime Defender, Diabolical and Madame Trop Vite are set to represent Britain.
The Australian-bred Rocket Man, a three-year-old trained by the South African Patrick Shaw, is unbeaten in seven starts at Kranji, where he came close to lowering his own 6f track record last time out despite not being extended in the Group 1 Lion City Cup.
"I've had a lot of good stayers in my career, won a lot of grade 1s in South Africa and here, but it is always good to have a sprinter," Shaw told the Sydney Morning Herald.
"I've had a few but none as good as him," added the trainer. "When you think there is no petrol in the tank, he finds a gear."
Shaw, though, is aware it is no easy task to beat Takeover Target. "He is a marvel, a phenomenon," he said.
"Like they say, he is every trainer's dream and I can't wait to see the movie about him."
According to the media releases issued by the Singapore Turf Club, trainer Joe Janiak appears to be having a few concerns about Takeover Target, who is stopping off en route to Royal Ascot.
The nine-year-old has left some feed in his bin in the quarantine stables over the past couple of days, but cleaned up overnight.
"He's used to having other horses around him," said Janiak. "He's not used to being on his own and I think he's fretting.
"We've left some music playing for him and hopefully that will do the trick."
After trotting a lap ofthe Singapore racecourse on Tuesday, Takeover Target cantered off before running the last 600m in 42.1s.
Hong Kong Sprint winner Inspiration, the mount of Darren Beadman, was also off his feed after his flight.
"I'm much happier with him this morning," reported trainer John Moore. "He's putting on weight and he's eating up now."
Presvis remains favourite for the main event, the Singapore International Airlines Cup, where rivals include his former Luca Cumani-trained stablemate Bankable, Godolphin's Balius and last year's winner Jay Peg.
