A big score for Howells ... by Leon Setaro
16 years 2 months ago
Trainer Duncan Howells captured both KZN feature races over the week-end to send out due notice to visiting trainers that the days of KZN lying down for the rape of their season fruits are over. Last year the KZN local boys had the best winter season in many a year taking 2 of the grade 1 prizes on offer (Gypsy's Warning for Duncan Howells and Outcome for Mike Miller) and this time around things continue to roll with KZN holding their own in the features and sporting an explosion of entries into this year's 2009 July.

A big score for Howells
First bite came on Friday night when Tropical Empire obliterated the grade-2 Bettingworld 1900 opposition at Greyville, admittedly not the strongest field but nevertheless he left them all behind like gasping maidens! Until recently Tropical Empire had been with Michael Roberts before relocating to the Howells yard where he has flourished rapidly into a giant of his former self. He will now take his place in the Vodacom Durban July lineup and spearheads the KZN challenge in the race this year.
Polzeath trained by Duncan Howells, streaks in start-to-finish to win

On Sunday Howells was straight back to business at Clairwood, firing with Polzeath in the listed East Coast Handicap feature for a start-to-finish victory. This coupled with Tropical Empire scalping the Bettingworld 1900 on Friday must surely add up to a career highlight weekend for the stable.
Since moving to the magnificent Ashburton facility in PMB a few years back on a little more than a wing-and-a-prayer, Howells has been chipping away in the tranquility of the midlands to build up a professionally managed racing operation that produces results. When I stopped in for a surprise visit I was taken aback with how neat and spotlessly clean the facility is kept. And it's not only the slick operation back at home that impresses, Duncan consistently sends out his runners in powerhouse condition with standout hindquarter muscle mass + definition. This is a winning combination for thoroughbred owners and as his success grows, it's become clear why master racing Oracle Matthew Lips and Winning Form chose to sponsor Mr. Howells after recognising his potential early.
More winning frames incoming and a re-arranging of the
