Subject: Vodacom Durban July - Scratchings & Doubtful Starter

26 MAY 2009

Please be advised that the following horses have been withdrawn from the Vodacom Durban July by trainer Charles Laird on Tuesday, 26 May 2009, at 11h35:

Oracy
Always
Crown Of Power

Further news regarding the mare Dancer’s Daughter is that she has scratched from her engagement tomorrow, 27 May 2009, at Clairwood Racecourse and is a doubtful starter for all future events in this year’s Champions Season including the Vodacom Durban July. A definite decision will be taken by the end of this week or early next week.

from the racing post....

South African Dancer suffers injury setback
By Michael Clower5.58PM 26 MAY 2009

SOUTH AFRICA's champion racemare Dancer's Daughter has suffered a recurrence of her earlier splint problems and will be forced to miss the Durban July on July 4.

However, owner Graham Beck has decided to defer his plan to retire her to his Highlands Farms Stud for another season and trainer Justin Snaith is keen for her to take on Pocket Power again next term.

The five-year-old grey damaged a splint bone on her near-fore in March shortly after winning the Empress Club Stakes and Snaith decided to abandon the rest of her Johannesburg campaign.

Snaith said on Tuesday: "It's the same problem that she had in Jo'burg, and it has reoccurred. Veterinary advice strongly recommends not persevering because there is a chance of permanent damage if she is not allowed the recommended recovery period of three months. We are going to give her a proper break.

"Dancer's Daughter has too much stud value to take any chances, regardless of how small the risk involved.

"I feel she has some unfinished business to attend to in Cape Town. She has not yet runin the Queen's Plate and has had only one attempt at the J & B Met. I truly believe South Africa has not yet seen her full potential."

The daughter of Act One was bred in Wiltshire by Diana Joly and was bought for Beck byTom Goff at Tattersalls as a yearling for 52,000gns. She has won five Grade 1 races including a dead-heat with Pocket Power in last year's Durban July. She was beaten a neck by the same horse in the J & B Met in January.

True, zoro, but I suppose that even for a major owner the opportunity to race a horse like thiis comes around once in a blue moon. I'm sure they will retire her if there is any sign that she is not coming 200% right.
