Chestnut ka-ching!!!! by Leon Setaro

A lineup of monstrous proportions awaits punters and racing fans tomorrow with the first 4x grade-1s of the season all crammed into one meeting. This is the annual Scottsville sprint-fest and the crowds come out in droves for the occasion.

The 7th race is the SA Fillies Sprint and hot favourite 3year old Merlene De Lago is currently priced at 1/1 representing a 50% winning chance. 4year old Rei Rei is third in the betting at 10/1 and this looks to be a value proposition if she repeats her last effort. This filly has the unusual record of having won 2 races in KZN, both features and on the same day (26th April) but with a year in between them. Both those wins were nothing short of brilliant, showing that she’s good enough to beat anything on her day. The gamble here lies in whether she brings her A-game tomorrow and whether she will be suited to the Scottsville track. With everything aligned, she will be in a strong position to win the race and at 10/1 offers a chance worth taking.

The headliner of the day, the Golden Horse Casino sprint sees Earl of Surrey out again after a wicked performance to win the Drill Hall over 1400m. He ripped away at the top of the stretch to open an unassailable lead and hold off Tropical Empire and River Jetez easier than the 0.25 length margin suggests. Both these two have since come out to annihilate the opposition in their respective starts and the formline couldn’t be any stronger. It probably won’t be a walk in the part though as there’s many in this race with the credentials to lift the Scottsville sprinting crown but Earl of Surrey is the justifiable favourite and very generously priced at 4/1.

In the 9th race Forlisa returns to Scottsville for another crack at the winner’s enclosure, he’s been previewed in this column before after putting in an eye catching performance when winning 2 runs back at Greyville. His next run was disappointing but he was last turning for home and wasn’t good enough to give away many lengths and still be competitive. He meets a decent lineup here but at 7/1 may just be worth a nibble in a small field of 8 runners.
