THE Tote are extending the Placepot to South African race meetings covered on TurfTV from Monday.

Stand-alone pools are being offered and standard UK rules will apply.

Totepool managing director David Craven said: "The introduction of Placepots for South African meetings will provide another attractive opportunity for customers in and around the lunchtime period in betting shops, further extending the availability of the favourite racing bet."

Does that mean the tote won't be sending any money to SA for said bet?

Emailed the Uk tote and asked them a few questions regarding the "South African Placepot"

Happy to say i got a quick answer, interesting ending to the email...

Dear Robert,

Thank you for your enquiry.

In answer to your questions:

1. South African customers can open accounts at www.totesport.com , and place bets into UK pools, subject to our standard new account identification and age verification checks.

2. The UK tote has liaised closely with Phumelela South Africa in recent years and we do have some limited experience of co-mingling with them. However, in this instance it was always our plan to launch the placepot product as a UK tote pool.

3. South African racing/stakes will not benefit directly. UK tote is government owned and the profits we generate are for the benefit of UK racing. However, placepot is a very popular bet in the UK and we hope that the launch of this product will help raise overall interest in South African racing in the UK.

One area where you may be able to help our customers is with racecard, runners and form information. Although some sources exist, information is limited and can be hard to come by in the UK. My knowledge of your own activities is limited but if your website had a tipster who could preview the races on a daily basis, and this could be accessed by UK punters, then this could be a great help. This would possibly help to drive interest in the new bet, and South African racing more generally.

Thank you for contacting us.

Kind regards,

Malcolm Knowles

Online betting has killed the betting shop in the uk,When i worked in the betting shop we hardly took a bet on south african racing and South african racing is not on tv in uk homes so not sure how the south african placepot will take off?

Saying that the Placepot is a popular bet in the Uk!

There was between £60k-£90k in the uk placepot pools today and about £7k in the irish pools so potential is there
