NAIDOO HOLDS ONTO LEAD AS BIG CITY LIFE DOMINATES DAILY NEWS
15 years 11 months ago
Big City Life showed his class and justified even money favouritism by winning the Gr.1 Daily News 2000 impressively. The son of Casey Tibbs took up the running early in the straight to win well from a fast finishing Dan De Lago.
Gypsy’s Warning (Mogok) failed to overcome a bad draw but still secured 10 points for her followers by finishing third in the Woolavington. Zirconeum (Jallad) reversed the form of the SA Fillies Classic and won the Woolavington with authority, dispelling any beliefs that she might not stay the trip. Mother Russia (Windrush) showed that she too has stamina by finishing a very creditable second.
Smart Banker (Strike Smartly) also garnered points for his followers by winning a Conditions race earlier in the day and securing 2 points for the win.
Kuben Naidoo holds on the lead of the Charity Turf Challenge with 112 points but needs to keep an eye on Patrick Bradley who shot up the leader board to fill second placing with 107 points.
The spot prize winners this past weekend are Malcolm Moran who wins a R500 betting voucher from Grant Felix and Marc Horsfield who gets his R500 betting voucher from Trevor Fourie.

The Gr.1 Gold Challenge provides Charity Turf Challenge entrants the next all-important 25 bonus points on offer after Zimbabwean bred, Earl Of Surrey, did the honours in the Gr.1 Golden Horse Casino Sprint a few weeks ago.
With the withdrawal of last year’s winner, Dancer’s Daughter, popular selections, Pocket Power, Our Giant and River Jetez are likely to dominate the betting in this famous WFA event run over the Clairwood Park Racecourse mile on Saturday. However, none of the above has succeeded in past runnings of this race, Pocket Power’s 2007 second place being his best effort, and it would come as no surprise to see former KZN Guineas winner, Kapil, use his turn of foot to good effect.
The Gr.2 Tibouchina Stakes and Gr.3 Cup Trial are also featured in what should be an excellent day’s racing.
Further afield, don’t forget to look out for Lt. Samson in Port Elizabeth on Friday and Aluminium whose July prep is being run in Johannesburg on Sunday. One thing’s for sure, by the end of the weekend, the Charity Turf Challenge Leader Board is most likely to be very different!
This weekend’s list of qualifiers is as follows:
PORT ELIZABETH
Race 1 – Racing Express Juvenile Plate:
5. Lt Samson
CLAIRWOOD
Race 2 – Gatecrasher Stakes:
3. Martini Required
Race 3 – Devon Air Stakes:
2. Generous Anna
Race 7 – Tibouchina Stakes (Gr.2):
1. Charming Lady
2. Oracle News
3. Prestic
4. Ethereal Lady
7. Sahara
9. Mother Russia
10. Sparkling Gem
12. Promises to Keep
Race 8 – Cup Trial (Gr.3):

2. Surfin’ USA
3. Senor Versace
6. Meteor Shower
8. Vision of Grandeur
Race 9 – Gold Challenger (Gr.1):

2. Our Giant
3. Buy and Sell
