Ladies day boosting racing

You got to say this works Musselburgh have their biggest ever crowd the same day as the Epsom Derby

NEVER mind that it was Derby day, Musselburgh pulled in a sell-out record crowd of 8,800 last Saturday, largely due to its ladies' day promotion, which built on changes in the lay-out of public areas that increased the previous 7,500 limit.

General manager Bill Farnsworth said: "The popularity of Ladies' Day just keeps growing, and if we had the capacity, we could accommodate a much larger crowd, but we are delighted with what we have achieved in the past six years.

"This was the first time the event has suffered from adverse weather, which presented some challenges, but overall it was a great success. Come rain or shine, we will be ready next year to welcome another massive crowd."

Biggest non-racing winner was Lisa Nicholson, 27, who travelled from Barnehurst in Kent, where she runs her own PR agency specialising in hairdressing. After being crowd Queen of Style, she drove home with a limited edition Mini Graphite, courtesy of sponsor Peter Vardy (Edinburgh).

Nicholson is used to making headlines. Last year, she and builder boyfriend Luke Scott figured in the Sun in a feature on how members of the public might look if their photographs were airbrushed. No need for such measures at Musselburgh.

She said: "Ladies day was such a wonderful event, and the fact that it was raining didn't seem to put a dampener on the day. My friends and I were having a bit of a reunion and winning the Mini was the icing on the cake."

Chester followed the theme on Tuesday evening, when the crowd was ten per cent up on last year. Hollyoaks stars Ricky Whittle and Carley Stenson compered a best-dressed competition that drew over 500 original entrants.

Top choice from ten finalists was Zoe Burns, from Liverpool, who took away nearly £2,000 worth of vouchers from outlets such as the Trafford centre, Karen Millen and Coast.

Must say Hibby had a great day at the races at Musselburgh, including the Powderhall sprint, it was a full house and a great vibe.
Racing is all about the social fun side to get punters to the track, imo.

Getting nearly 10,000 to the track when the Derby is being run is a feat!
