False Rail Configuration For July Day
15 years 11 months ago
Any chance of us actually getting this before race day.I have phoned Greyville but am assured that they will not have it before saturday morning. This may seem insignificant to most people, but the rail configuration @ Greyville makes a huge difference, especially when it is only 2 or 3 metres off the inside. It is common knowledge that the rail is being moved after race 6,but from where to where?
The phrase 'brain game' is continually bandied about, but we are expected to thumb suck continuously. It's a major meeting planned months in advance, how is it possible that nobody can tell me how the false rail is to be configured?

Because they are probably busy fighting over parking tickets and fretting over the ramp on which the fashionistas will parade between races!
They are not remotely interested in the 'brain game' when they are teeing up the biggest of the 'twice a year' opportunities to fleece a huge number of day trippers and socialites whilst doing absolutely nothing to promote the sport.
Having seen what some marquee holders pump into the tent alone in terms of expendtiure it continues to amaze me that the race carries such small beer in terms of prize money.
But then getting sponsorship was never a strong suit! Nor delivering excellence for that matter.

I may be wrong but I read somewhere that there would be two rail configurations on the day, it will be moved just before the July so that it can be run on "new grass".
Hope I'm not talking crap and imagining things ....

From the RA WEBSITE
FOR the first time two false rails will be used on Vodacom Durban July day at Greyville.
The rails will be erected before the meeting, starting at about the 1 500m mark. The outside of the two false rails will be set at 14 metres on the home turn, while the inside one will be at 10 metres.
After the seventh race, the race before the Durban July itself, the outside false rail will be removed.
This means the July runners will have a fresh strip of grass to run on from the 1 500m mark to the home turn, while the inside section in the straight is also likely to be fresh as horses in the previous races will largely make their runs down the outside.
Ralph Smout, who oversees all Gold Circle’s KwaZulu-Natal racecourses and training tracks, explained: “As is usually the case, there will be more than 200 horses running on July day and the course can get cut up. This year for the first time the July runners will have immaculate, fresh grass to run on.”
Before the big day, the Greyville course management team, headed up by Allen Bharath, will be rehearsing the task of taking down the outside rail. Bharath said he was confident it would prove difficult. - David Thiselton, Gold Circle
