Asiatic Boy heads ATR Stateside coverage

Preview: USA, Saturday 10.49pm BST (live on ATR)

Belmont Park: Suburban Hcap (Grade 2) 1m2f, dirt, 3yo+

DUBAI stalwart Asiatic Boy (Kiaran McLaughlin/Alan Garcia) bids to build on a promising debut on the American dirt in the Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park on Saturday, when ATR Stateside is due to broadcast a feast of graded-stakes action.

The former Mike de Kock-trained five-year-old, six times a winner at the Dubai Carnival, was only a length behind Macho Again in the Grade 1 Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs three weeks ago, just touching off the estimableEinstein for second.

Now new trainer Kiaran McLaughlin sends him back to the track quickly for the Suburban, a $400,000 event that has lost its Grade 1 status for 2009.

"He ran great last time," said McLaughlin. "He had a troubled trip and still ran second. Him and Einstein beat each other up a little bit trying for the same hole twice.

"I'm definitely not happy about the three weeks, but the horse is very happy and he couldn't be doing any better."

Asiatic Boy, who flopped in this year's Dubai World Cup, shoulders top-weight against nine rivals, headed by It's A Bird (Marty Wolfson/Javier Castellano), winner of three of his last four starts including the Grade 2 Oaklawn Handicap in April.

Late runner Ready's Echo (Todd Pletcher/Ramon Dominguez) was a troubled seventh beaten less than five lengths, in the Grade 1 Met Mile.

Also on Saturday

Belmont Park: Dwyer Stakes (Grade 2) 1m½f, dirt, 3yo (BST 9.44pm, live on ATR)

The promising Warrior's Reward has plenty to live up to here because, in effect, he has cost Calvin Borel the ride on Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird for the remainder of the season.

Borel did not commit to riding Mine That Bird owing to an arrangement with trainer Ian Wilkes to partner Warrior's Reward in his next two races - which could clash with Mine That Bird.

Belmont Park: Prioress Stakes (Grade 1) 6f, dirt, 3yo fillies (BST 10.16pm, live on ATR)

The speedy Gabby's Golden Gal (Bob Baffert/Javier Castallano), all-the-way winner of the Grade 1 Acorn Stakes last time out, drops back two furlongs for the Prioress.

She faces pressure for the lead, though, notably from Heart Ashley (Steve Asmussen/Edgar Prado), who is on a four-timer, which could theoretically set things up nicely for late runners such as Be Fair and On The Moon.

Asiatic Boy settles for second in New York

Report: USA, Saturday

Belmont Park: Suburban Hcap (Grade 2) 1m2f, dirt, 3yo+

DUBAI stalwart Asiatic Boy had to settle for second place again on Saturday when he made his second start for new American trainer Kiaran McLaughlin.

Sent off 8-5 favourite under top-weight, the five-year-old was beaten two lengths by Dry Martini (Barclay Tagg/Edgar Prado) in the Grade 2 Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park.

Three weeks earlier, Asiatic Boy had finished second on his US debut in the Grade 1 Stephen Foster Handicap.

Asiatic Boy got his head in front inside the two-furlong marker but Dry Martini put in a huge run through the straight to score as his rival got leg-weary.

Thepair are set for a rematch in the Grdae 1 Whitney Handicap at Saratoga on August 8.

"I didn't like it - we finished second," said a clearly disappointed McLaughlin.

"But he ran well - we'll have moretime going into the Whitney, five weeks, and he's a very nice horse who ran well.

"And the winner ran well. Congratulations to Barclay Tagg and his man, and we'll go from there."

Speaking of Dry Martini, Tagg said: "He's a lovely, lovely horse. He always runs his race. With all the speed in there, I thought it would work out. I wish I had 20 like him."

Jockey Edgar Prado added: "I was very comfortable and he was doing everything so easy. Once he found room he just levelled off and found another gear. I was very proud of him."

Also on Saturday

Belmont Park: Dwyer Stakes (Grade 2) 1m½f, dirt, 3yo

Rachel Alexandra's owner Jess Jackson may have another three-year-old star if the budding Kensei (Steve Asmussen/Edgar Prado) can build on the winning performance he put in to take the Dwyer.

Kensei, a 6.7-1 shot, followed pacesetter Just Ben to the top of the straight, then built a commanding lead in the final two furlongs to best Convocation by more than three lengths.

The favourite Warrior's Reward was another two lengths back in third under Calvin Borel after losing all chance when stumbling at the start.

"Every step of the way I was feeling comfortable," said Prado, who later took the Suburban withDry Martini.

"When I turned him loose, he responded," he added.

Jackson added: "Curlin spoiled me. Now these horses are spoiling me."

Borel was not too downcast about Warrior's Reward. "He broke badly and I couldn't get him going," said the rider. "The ground just broke out under him. It was bad luck. We' get them next time."

Belmont Park: Prioress Stakes (Grade 1) 6f, dirt, 3yo fillies

Owner Edward Evans enjoyed a one-two with Cat Moves (Anthony Dutrow/Ramon Dominguez) and Light Green, the pair being coupled for betting purposes on the New York pari-mutuel.

Cat Moves, who ran down her Light Green in the straight, was winning for the third time in as many starts.

"We were high on both fillies," said Evans, "probably higher on the second finisher because she had more of a record. Man, they both ran fantastic."
