Jazzy Wins U. S. Sprint Stakes
15 years 11 months ago
Jazzy rallied from far back in the $65,000 Caress Stakes today at Belmont Park on soft turf going 6 furlongs about an hour after a hard rain storm turned the course into a bog. She got up late to win by half a length, with K. Abdullah's French Group winner Modern Look in her wake. It was her third stakes win in New York, which is America's toughest racing circuit. She failed to conceive this season to Johannesburg. Earlier this year we won a Grade 3 with Unbridled Belle, who failed to conceive to A. P. Indy. In future years, we plan to breed more mares, make sure they don't get in foal, then win stakes races with them. Obviously, many of these mares are like women...they would rather run than have sex.

Congrats! Good to see Jazzy in the winners box again, paying 24.50 a win too.

Re: Re: Jazzy Wins U. S. Sprint Stakes
15 years 11 months agoJazzy, who had not visited the winners’ enclosure since September of 2007, circled the field today in the $65,000 Caress Stakes at Belmont Park to win by a half-length and spring a 24 to 1 upset of the 6-furlong black-type event that was run on yielding turf following a hard late afternoon shower and strong overnight rain. Racing next to last of 8 in the run on the backstretch, the South African import was taken wide to launch her bid in the final furlong and proved strongest at the finish to score as the second longest shot in the race over J Z Warrior and odds-on favorite Smart and Fancy.
Jazzy had some pretty smart one-corner distaffers behind her this afternoon, including Juddmonte Stable’s Group 3 Prix Sandringham heroine Modern Look, trained by Bobby Frankel, and the 14-time winner and $785,392 earner Smart and Fancy.
“I knew by the way she had trained the past couple of weeks that she was ready to do something big,” said trainer Mark Hennig, who was running her for first time since he had her in Florida over the winter, before the mare was sent to Kentucky to be bred.
The daughter of Kentucky-based Mutakddim trained fine in Kentucky, but she did not have her mind on racing and seemed to go off form, until returned full time to training and taken out of broodmare mode.
“Once she knew she was a full time racehorse again, she began training like she meant business,” said Hennig. “This was a very good win for her, because I know she prefers the ground harder. Alan (Garcia) told me he got hit by a couple of giant clods turning for home. When he came back to the winners’ circle, he looked like he had just ridden in a sloppy track race he was so covered in mud.”
Jazzy was scoring her third stakes victory in New York, earlier having taken the Grade 2 Gallant Bloom Handicap on dirt at Belmont Park and the Capades Stakes on grass at Saratoga. The talented internationalist now boasts a record in 21 starts of 6 wins and 4 seconds. The $40,920 she earned for winning the Caress Stakes boosted her career gleanings to just shy of the $300,000 mark.
In South Africa, Jazzy was a Listed winner and third in the Grade 1 South African Fillies Sprint Stakes to National Colour, who was the top-rated female sprinter in England last season after being imported to race in the United Kingdom and Europe. Jazzy also has placed in stakes in the United States at Fair Grounds, Monmouth Park and Tampa Bay in other grass sprints.
