MURIEL’S PLACE OF SAFETY
Muriel’s place of safety has been in operation for just over twenty years. Based in Vereeniging, this home cares for children from birth up to the teen years. Children stay at Muriel’s either for a short period only or on an ongoing basis. Most do not have a safe or appropriate home environment, generally because of severe financial problems, domestic violence, alcoholism and similar reasons. Children are usually assigned to this place of safety by the courts. Muriel and her husband care for each and every child with parental love and compassion. If old enough they attend the local school, but babies are obviously cared for at home.
While the home is welcoming and friendly, it is small and the children have to share bedrooms (separate for boys and girls) but there is only one bathroom.
Day to day living costs are a problem as only a minimal amount of funding is provided by the government. This is not sufficient to cover the monthly costs of food, washing, school uniforms, stationery, medical fees and other essentials. assists by providing monthly supplies of cleaning materials, stationery and other necessities.
Our plan for 2010 is to build a second bathroom so that the older children can have some privacy and to make day to day living together a little easier for all.
