'EL PICHA' KEEPS CHALLENGERS AT BAY!
16 years 3 weeks ago
As the Charity Turf Challenge enters the home straight, ‘El Picha’ still has his nose in front with the contest set to go down to the wire on Canon Gold Cup day. Unfortunately Pocket Power (Jet Master) did not manage to do the same, as Ivory Trail (Badger’s Drift) caused something of an upset by catching the champion in the dying strides of the Gr.1 Champions Cup run at Clairwood last Saturday. He also became the first Gr.1 winner for Cheveley Stud sire Badger’s Drift, incidentally also the breeders of Ivory Trail. The Joey Ramsden trained Ivory Trail scored a maximum 15 points for his followers, while Pocket Power scored 12 points.
Third was Buy And Sell (National Emblem) who bounced right back to his best in pushing the winner and second place horse all the way to the wire. He earned 10 points for his loyal followers. The only other point scorer this weekend was Lady Bequick (National Assembly), who scored 2 points for convincingly winning a Fillies and Mares Conditions Race at Clairwood on All Stars Day.
‘El Picha’ retains his lead at the top of the leader board with 242 points, while William Venters sits just on his heels with 235 points and Jonathan Snaith chases hard in third with 222 points.
No less the 19 Charity Turf Challenge horses will be in action at Greyville this coming Saturday when the Gr.1 Canon Gold Cup, the Gr. 2 Gold Bracelet and two Listed Races, the Umngeni Handicap and the Darley Arabian, will be contested. Like last year, the outcome of this year’s Charity Turf Challenge will be decided on the last day of the competition. Will ‘El Picha’ hold on to win or will he suffer the heartbreak felt by last year’s long time leader, Robert Bloomberg, who saw it all slip away when Desert Links stormed to victory. Only time will tell.
The lucky spot prize winners this past weekend were Colin Elsworth and Selvan Marimuthu who each won a R500 betting voucher with the compliments of Dave Laverack of Kruger Racing.
