The categories of going on turf racetracks in South Africa are being changed with effect from Saturday 1 August, the first day of the 2009-10 racing season.
Six categories will be used to define the state of the going on turf tracks from 1 August:

Firm (abbreviation F) - penetrometer reading 15 and lower

Good to firm (Q) - penetrometer 16-18

Good (G) - penetrometer 19-23

Good to soft (Y) - penetrometer 24-26

Soft (S) - penetrometer 27-30

Heavy (H) - penetrometer 31 and higher

Makes sense. Better than the previous system. If they follow it religiously and don't cheat because 'heavy' puts punters off. If it's heavy it's heavy-not soft.

Yes, that baffled me too. There had to be at least one lapse in logic there somewhere.

F - Firm
FG - Firm to Good
G - Good
GS - Good to Soft
S - Soft
SH - Soft to Heavy
H - Heavy
