Hall of Fame jockey Ismael 'Milo' Valenzuela, who twice won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, died on Wednesday at the age of 74 after a long illness.
Valenzuela's daughter Diana told the National Racing Hall of Fame and Museum that her father had died at his home in Arcadia, California surrounded by his children, grandchildren and other family members.
The third of 22 children, Valenzuela was born to Mexican parents in McNary, Texas in December 1934. He went on to win 2,545 races and prize money of $20,122,760 in a glittering career from 1951 to 1980.
Valenzuela completed the double of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness in 1958, riding Tim Tam, and again in 1968, on board Forward Pass. He was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Historic Review Committee in 2008.
