A Few numbers in horse racing

15 years 11 months ago

2008

Number of horses in training.....5715
average training fees (est)......R 5,000.00
Total training fees per month....R 28,575,000.00
Total Training fees per year.....R 342,900,000.00
Total training fees per day......R 921,774.19
Total training fees per hour.....R 38,407.26
Total training fees per minute...R 640.12

Guess the industry is still strong.. R342m pa in training fees only..

1997

Number of horses in training.....9250
average training fees (est)......R 2,500.00
Total training fees per month....R 23,125,000.00
Total Training fees per year.....R 277,500,000.00
Total training fees per day......R 745,967.74
Total training fees per hour.....R 31,081.99
Total training fees per minute...R 518.03

but if we had the same number of horses in training now

Number of horses in training.....9250
average training fees (est)......R 5,000.00
Total training fees per month....R 46,250,000.00
Total Training fees per year.....R 555,000,000.00
Total training fees per day......R 1,491,935.48
Total training fees per hour.....R 62,163.98
Total training fees per minute...R 1,036.07

Guess the industry would be booming..

The questions to be answered..

1. Why did the number of trainers decline from 211 to 184..
A. financially not viable at the low training fees???
B. Other..please explain..

2. Why did the number of horses decline from 9250 to 5715..
A. did we breed less horses..due to stud farms that closed down..
B. not finacially viable to be a stud farm..
C. other..please explain

In both instances (other), the prophets of doom and gloom during the corporatisation process predicted that:

If horseracing is not corporatised & the tax rate reduced, the entire industry will decline.

Well, industry was corporatised, tax dramatically reduced, many lost jobs, and the industry has declined.

What's next?

The gaming board has not teeth, no authority, nothing......Would you guys even know which gaming board to approach?
The Gauteng Gaming board, the western cape variety, the durban one or maybe the free state gaming board???

I don't think the National gaming board has made a decision that stuck in, well...forever!!!!!!!!!

For me the problem lies squarely with the people who run racing....The people who should be loobying for lower tax rates, the people who should be trying to get new blood into horse racing....PHUMELELA!!!

They want to be the biggest, baddest company in racing, they should get working on fix the sport that they derive so much revenue from.....Oh hold on a minute. WOuld they even care if SA racing went under? They make more money from International racing anyway!!

I hope we will be ok, but man it is going to be hard!

More sites like ABC needs to get out there and more attention should be paid to us.....There are some fantastic ideas that have come out of this forum....Just wish Scotia and the boys could get more recognition!!!!

Keep firing boys, keep firing!!!!

There are far too many horses in training esp in Jhb..Phum will thru their programming and many grass tracks available ensure that many are weeded out.

Wait till the rain comes and lets count the no of abandoned meetings

No upkeep or polytrack will make Jack a very sad boy

The game is broken but no one cares

"No one cares" BUT they saw fit to find the £15k or so it cost to promote sa racing at newmarket and have a jolly day out. More owners from abroad so that they CAN BE LIED to over the fone as to why there horses are not running. This is why there is a drive for foreign investment US LOCAL owners/trainers are asking TOO MANY QUESTIONS.

adios bookies & tommy:

there is a vacuum for a credible voice from amongst the horseracing fraternity to make representations to Government as a body.

Right now, the only feed-in they get is from Phumelela.

As for the various Gambling Boards- most are there as political 'appointments' and know zilch about horseracing; the casino is more appealing, probably with 'free', declarable perks. Also, why waste their off-time with the industry when the casinos dish out free perks and special service for them?

The Gambling Board officials cannot initiate any recommendations- the board members must do so on recommendations/representation from the industry!

Finally, each Province (where there is racing) has its own legislation on horseracing/betting. The emphasis is on how much revenue it generates, not on WHO generates this income and how!

The National Gambling Board is another circus- the only time they come alive is when they have that biennial indaba (at exorbitant fees and faraway places which the industry owners can afford as 'entertainment').

In fact, I suspect collusion between the industry and the NGB to keep 'unsavoury' elemnts out of these indabas (I am talking from experience)!

For one aspect, they could (even if I say so) have had 'yours truly' as a guest speaker on meaningful transformation of the industry; that would be heretical!

Now, start mobilising!

adios bookies:

they don't even answer to mine- two of us! We copy correspondences to the Premier, MEC Finance and Min of DTI. If that fails, the President!

As tommy said, keep firing boys!

Eventually, we will get someone who listens, or, even better, joins us!

But, mobilise, we have to so that there is a credible pressure group!

Make the President our Patron!

But

latest results HIGHLIGHTS

revenue from INTERNATIONAL operations up 56%.
profit before tax from INTERNATIONAL operations up 30%.
dividends MAINTAINED (??? i thought INTERNATIONAL operations are up ???) at 25c per share.

So when are the shareholders getting their cut from this "booming" INTERNATIONAL operations?

This must still be the hardest business to control and compete within yourself.
Keep owners, Trainers and Punters happy at all times.

Pay towards everything.

Tracks
Stabling.
Stake Cheque
etc.

Must allow competition from Bookmakers.
Then punters will always say but this and that Bookmaker will give you a better return.
They will because it doesn't cost them a cent.

They are even punting on overseas info from Phum also.
It's like a parasite that just doesn't want to disappear.

When will you owners and punters realize that the bookies are destroying the game for all...........
